People, very sorry for bringing this question. But this is something that is becoming troublesome, if not humilating, for all of us Brazilians.
Someone from Brazil (and we all know this was ONE individual) leeched the ENTIRE msxarchive.nl mirror. Some times. And now the ENTIRE country is banned from msxarchive.
Ok, I do understand the level of damage and troubles this guy created. But what ALL the Brazilian MSX users has to do with that?
We are a very active community, we still develops lots of hardware and even new software of good quality for MSX. Why should ALL of us Brazilians still be blamed for the error of ONE guy?
I humbly ask - Please unban Brazil. We don't deserve this kind of treatment.
Thanks
Alexandre Souza

Man, I reckoned Brazil was un-banned for a long time already and that the whole thing was history and done with!
It's a bloody shame how one idiot spoiled it for an entire country!
I hope for you guys this situation is solved soon.
Until that time, maybe you can rely on your international MSX-fellows to get stuff for you. |

Sure the Brazilian community is a true example for the rest of the msx world! And the numerous schematics and tutorial (DIY, upgrades etc.) provided on Brazilian sites are simply brilliant, very useful.

I can't believe this was intentional... Does anyone know about what happened or how this can be solved?
Cheers

It is not only msxarchive, also almost all articles on my website on msx are affected by these bans and bandwidth exceeded problems, since they were hosted on funet and now on msxarchive. I choose funet to make sure the files were there 'forever' but this fails.
I have 1000 MB of my own webspace filled with non-MSX material, related to other computers. I cant afford spending even more money on this.
If some one can spare about 500 MB webspace for the non-games material at least the documents, books, do-it-yourself articles, program libraries could be available again for our brazilian friends. It is not high volume traffic, the game leachers seem to be the troublemakers. Please? |

The best thing to solve this is not posting to MRC, but to contact OmegaMSX, the maintainer of the archive (and he's also paying for it, yes).
You can easily find his web site and his contact info online: http://www.omega.cistron.nl/ |

Well, the problem is that only banning one IP address didn't solve the issue. As soon as the ban gets lifted, will this guy start leeching again and thus getting msxarchive getting into bandwith trouble again? Or do you have a way to solve this issue?
At the moment, the option seems to be:
* Ban a large range of Brasilian IP's, but the rest of the world can use the archive
* Don't ban anyone, and get into bandwith problems and go offline most of the time
And since everyone seems to know who the person is who is causing this: Has anyone spoken to him about it? Has anyone informed the msxachrive maintainer about this? What does this person have to say for himself? What were his motives? Will he do it again if the IP ban gets lifted?
The solution is in the questions above. I don't expect that the ban will get lifted untill the above mentioned issues are clear and resolved.

The Dutch provider Sohosted is very cheap... I use that.
500MB with a datalimit of 10GB a month is 2,50 euros a month there... then you can optionally get a domain name, which is 14 euros a year and I think a one-time only 15 euros registration costs.
No, I'm not affiliated with them

To the Brazilian people:
There never was a ban on a country and there still is no such thing. Only a couple of IP's have been trashed. This is them:

ErrorDocument 403 /errors/403.html
I've removed that now, but still people from Brazil seem to get a 404 error??
Also you should've got a 403 error with a blue error page.
I have no clue to why this is happening.

OmegaMSX,
Do you still have certain clients/browsers banned? Maybe this can cause the current issue?

It's not possible to limit more severely the band-width ? (1KB/Sec) in this way normal msx users can normally work, because they download files of few 100KB at once, but idiots cannot wait 11 days to download 1GB archive. (especially if the ftp connection goes down after say, 6hours max)

this is only a stupid idea, like a joke, but similar limitation could resolve the problem... without penalization for some locations.

Thanks for the pointer. Good prices, my current provider has about the same price levels. Adding the about 650 MB MSX files will cost me about 70 to 80 euro per year extra. Every year. Tristan spends more, so does the MRC crew for their website.
And to be honest, I will not spent that on the MSX community anymore. I have done that nearly 10 years now. If Tristan stops spending all his money on the msxarchive, the material will go away. |

Investigation revealed that people are probably firewalled at my isp somehow (Without my knowledge). Can someone who can't reach msxarchive post a traceroute output? This is how it's supposed to look (especially last 2 hops):
Also, the site should be ping-able. It seems that anyone who can't reach it, also can't ping it.
