Couldn't keep this under my hat any longer:
I'm working on an MSX 2 version of the game Sweet Acorn!
At the moment, it's going quite swell.
For testing, I simply reproduced the original graphics, only in MSX 2 palette.
This graphics on this screenshot (click to enlarge) are actually in screen 5 and the characters are software sprites:
Main objective is to make it feel and play just like the original.
Besides that, Acorn 2 will feature:
* Variety in type of acorn to throw; sticky, exploding, etc...
* Slightly more strategic/puzzle game elements
* New enemies/behavior
* Multiple "worlds" to play (your average ice, vulcano stages...)
* Probably some 2-player modes; maybe even 3-player
* Screen 5 graphics, of course, with more colours, more animation & variety
* Fm-Pac music
* Even a storyline, that is, if I ever find out what's the story of the original
...I'll keep you posted about relevant progress!
Guess I should also sort of check the possibility of getting some Taito-lawyers after my ass...
Not quite the company I would choose to %$@# with. |

Indeed! I tried to copy the graphics accurately as possible. Compare them to the originals:
http://www.generation-msx.nl/msxdb/softwareinfo/1694
...I even retained the tiny "slip" (I mean really tiny) which Taito themselves made back then:
You know how hardware sprites always get one pixel lower than the Y-coordinate you actually assign them to?
Well, in Sweet Acorn, the enemies and acorns seem to be aligned to the grid, but the player isn't.
Anyway, when everything works just like the original, it's time to really start using screen 5. |

Sweet Acorn was one of my favorite games when I was a kid.
Hopefully this project will finish soon! |

Don't worry; as long as you don't aim for mass-distribution all over the world, there's no chance of any company to come after you because of a fangame.
Nice project; you didn't tell me anything about this when I was at your party last week. Came up suddenly? |

Probably jltursan said this because of the problems with the Pair Logic developed by Karoshi.
