metal gear was better on msx.

I also have a lot of personal preferences of MSX versions over NES ones (despite their lack of scrolling), but I'm biased

Some good 2D platform games to try... well, a lot of Konami games, and some others:

Goonies, Usas, Vampire Killer (=castlevania; this one is prettier but lacks scrolling, but has a key searching element not present in the Nes game), Contra (again, no scrolling), Psycho World (which is not by Konami, but HAS scrolling )

...there's more, but that's what got into my mind instantly.

Check GenerationMSX with "platform" as search option.

Check The Maze of Galious! Definately better than on the NES.

I don't know what MSX you've got, but Generation MSX has a nice rating top list: http://www.generation-msx.nl/msxdb/highest_rated

Hmm, it may not be exactly what you expect though

For me, The Maze of Galious is still the ultimate 2D platformer and it runs on any MSX.

And you think that top 25 isn't the least bit questionable?

In whatever best<gamething> poll we do, Konami wins, and even when they wouldn't win, they'd end-up high anyway. The first Konami in that t25 list is Knightmare on place 22! Instead, PA3 and Shrines of Enigma are on #1 and #2 ..
1. Pumpkin Adventure III 9.81 10
2. Shrines of Enigma 9.30 17
3. Roller Ball 9.28 11
4. Fray - In Magical Adventure 9.16 25
5. Turmoil 9.01 11
6. Science Fiction 9.01 18
7. Akin 9.00 12
8. Goody 8.99 12
9. Fray - In Magical Adventure 8.94 21
10. Hydlide 8.86 14
11. Xak - The Art of Visual Stage 8.82 27
12. Laydock 2 - Last Attack 8.77 17
13. Xak II - Rising of the Redmoon 8.56 23
14. Strategic Mars 8.55 11
15. Golvellius 8.49 26
16. Hydlide 3 - The Space Memories 8.42 19
17. Aleste 2 8.39 66
18. Rune Master 3 8.32 19
19. Laydock 8.31 26
20. Alpha Roid 8.31 13
21. Zanac 8.29 64
22. Knightmare 8.29 168
23. Nemesis 2 8.25 106
24. Hydlide 2 - Shine of Darkness 8.20 15
25. Space Manbow 8.12 51

I mean, the presented titles are sometimes completely ridiculous!

Well, it's what the people voted! But as I already said: it's not exactly what you'd expect.

But I'd say that it is curious that the highest marks belong to the less voted game. From this point of view, I'd believe that Knigthmare, with 168 votes, has a more solid score.

Anyway, if I've read it correctly, we were taliking about shooters, weren't we?

Mmm. I've messed two different threads. Sorry about that.

About platform games, I won't miss the latest developments for MSX: Caos Begins, The Cure, Caverns of Titan, Montana John, Phantomas Infinity. They do all rock! Of course, you shouldn't miss the classics: Maze of Galious, Vampire Killer, Takahashi no Boukejima, Magical Tree, Las Tres Luces de Glaurung, Temptations and so on.

To the previous post I should have added the latest Brazillian games, but I don't have an opinion about them because I haven't played them. Anyway, according to third persons' reviews, they are excellent games.

I think you mean something else, grammatically, something like "let's not forget the"

Try Akin by Parallax.
IMHO, this platformer game is among the best for MSX; it pushes the MSX2 to its limits.

Thanks for the correction, Wolfie. You know, it's not always easy for native Minorcans, even if Spanglish is my mother tongue I'm too a southerner to be a Shakespeare-alike

I was trying to say that it would be an unforgivable mistake not to play such games
