DragonBuster - title screen

DragonBuster - This mother's strong!

Right now, the story goes as follows... In ancient times my dad had both Metal Gear 1 and apparently this game, DragonBuster on cartridge. One terrible day in that ancient history, he gave both of them away to some random person at M.A.D. [MSX Avengers Doetinchem, fyi].
That cast aside, I always wondered what other game he gave away that day. So I 'generation-msx'-ed it, and I found DragonBuster. I downloaded it from you-know-where and started playing it. Well, it appeared to be a cracked version from SMA. I couldn't care less.
BUT WHAT IS THE POINT OF THIS GAME? I can't beat the dragon at all, no matter how I strike at it. Furthermore, I assume this has something to do with using items and stuff, so I wondered, how do I use items? I found out that using [Z], the game pauses and shows the item list, and with [X] I can swap out the active item. But how do I put it to good use?

Who can help me? Is there anyone?

Each dragon makes some funny looking headbangin' movement.

Every time its head comes down, give it as much strikes as you can with your sword.

Also, if you got the brown butterfly things, you can shoot some fireballs at it, which is a lot safer for you.

Oh, and you have to gain a L.O.T. of level / strength / HP at each new level!

(BTW I think this game sucks major donkey balls but I remember how to play it )

DemonSeed: how long would it take for me to beat this first one? I can get up close to it and hit it in the bullocks and knees time after time, and if I do the double jump trick, I can hit his head while jumping too.

But furthermore: how do I fire one of those fireballs?

Sorry, I don't really remember.

...Kicked the dragons' butt yet?

If not, I'll play the game tonight and see if I can recall the way to shoot fireballs.

Ducking and pushing the jump button does the trick.

However, in my memory it could also be done standing.

Major donkey balls, indeed! I once paid good money for this cartridge, beat it in one go and tossed it in the dumpster.

Hehe, feeling lucky, I used the [F9]/speedup option a couple of days ago, along with the SMA unlimited lives hack (and of course, this doesn't work at that sodding dragon, as the inflicted damage by it is hard-coded), got 20K experience points by beating the hell out of those critters that appear every once in a while and found out that for every 10K EXP, the HP will increase by 16.

Fair gameplay, hmmm?

The best thing about this game is probably the title screen

If you wait "too long" before ending a stage, the only enemies will be black/green gremlin things with teeth which normally totally destroy your shit in 10 seconds or so.

Playing this "trained" version however, you could take advantage of them as you gain a LOT of exp from this things.

This way, you'll be strong enough to kill the dragon in less hits than the usually required 65536 (wild hunch).

@manuel: Agree.

Erm, DemonSeed? Butcherin' the evil green-black far-too-fast Gremlin wankers only gives 60EXP point. So yes, I probably killed around 300 of 'em.

That dragon still seems unbeatable, while the bosses in between are just too easy. Who was the game developer? I'll sue his ass!

Maybe you got a cracked version?
would be an interesting copy protection: just make the endbosses unbeatable ;p

This is a good position to beat all the dragons. Keep your character stationary and hack away. The dragon keeps bowing its head into your spinning sword. It may move and attack. If so, jump away, return to the original position and start hacking again.

After every two levels you get to kiss a princess. Isn’t life great?

Play this game with a joystick. Really, I insist..
You need to practice and master your jumping (timing!) skills for the higher levels. You also need a lot of luck to beat this hell-bent awful game.
When you encounter a hanging rope you must jump in front of the rope and press up. Don’t jump in the middle or try to correct in midair, it’s no use.
Linger to long in a level and you will be punished! The fast and gnawing enemy that will appear will make the game impossible to play.
Most items you find are for energy or experience points. The key’s make it’s possible to take shortcuts on the map. The green branch item… Well, I don’t know what it’s for.
The collected fireballs can be thrown by pressing down, hold and press the jump-button. Save ‘m for the dragon fights.
But better yet, don’t play this game at all. It will suck the life out of you!
