You could also just write it with proper use of capitals, and later on count how many capitals you've actually used.. if it's just 8 or so, then you could probably tuck away 8 caps chars in some corner of your tileset.. |

Hmm, that's actually a pretty clever idea IMO.

Apart from the fact that having a nice and readable lowercase font in just 8x8 pixels is quite a PITA |

I guess you don't need a full tileset when telling the story...

That's right...just tell the story with some cutscenes and some pattern-fading-special-effect where you load a prearranged tileset of text each time...
that's what I do for KM3...and I use real gothic-font-type...very pretty !! |

What I always tend to do:
Cutscene graphics on tileset 1 & 2
Font on tileset 3

You probably could leave out the either case of the letter 'Q'. Now don't come bite me in the bum because you had a Q in the text. I hate those things. I never read them, unless they're in a proper demo[tm] |

Some bosses/characters in the scenario have got Amharic names like "Masnaq Tares" and the general 'black magic' power in the story is called "T'qur Asmat"... |

The quick squirrel intends to jump into the aquarium at quarter past six, to catch an oodle-quantity of guppies. Can you help him catch his meal?

(shameless self-promotion) I think the lowercase characters in C-BIOS' font definitely qualify as "nice and readable" |

Hehehehe.
I can resist to smile.... I can already see the reactions to our game.... 'great game.... too bad it uses capital'
Anyway. Capitals it will be. Why? Well the main thing is that I want to use text in-game. No reserved tilesetbank no switching the screens. I just want to be able to display text wherever I want in the levels/screen. Good gfx with enough variation AND a full (capital) characterset. That was the main goal for me (Yes, you can call me stupid now).

| As there were some gfx here and there spread out over the forum threads and news posts. And the demand for screens and update information we decided to open a thread dedicated to our project.
Ok time for some info......
- Moon over Arba Minch was initially an MSXdev'06 entry but exploded into a huge game.
- The game is mainly programmed in C. Assembly is used where needed (eg VRAM manipulation, music replayer, collision detection)
- 13 different levels each with its specific gameplay elements.
- Multiple (sub) bosses.
- We hope to release late 2009 or early 2010.
Time for some screens:
Feel free to ask.........

The title screen of the game is a real piece of art... The title is pixlated in Amharic, the alphabet used in Ethiopia, though it reads in English, very nicely done. It reminds me with English alphabet drawn as Japanese letters.
I've asked a native speaker of Amharic to read the title screen, he immediately recognized the letters but couldn't really come out with a usful interpretation of what was written. He told me it looked like an ancient dead language that nobody speaks nowadays |

Thanks. Indeed I used the Amharic font for the title. I enlarged and changed some characters to make it more readable.
If I'm correct John did some fine research and has included Ethiopian phrases/names in the script! (but not using Amharic font )
