OK, we have had similar subjects a bunch of times before... but the best MSX1 game contest keeps reminding me. There now is a list of over 200 MSX1 games battling for the best MSX1 game ever.. and, well... each game of them is more enjoyable than most 'new super-stunning-3D games' we get nowadays.

Now I'm wondering.. am I getting old already (23??), is it just nostalgia?? Or is it a fact that most new games are nothing more than cheap ripoffs, fun to look at for a couple of minutes to be never played again?

I agree!
All the 3D technology has brought more and more hollow games without any story and or gameplay.
Only a very few games are good (like Morrowind).
Gimmie more games with less 3d techs and more storyline (like the MSX RPGS like dragonslayer 6).

The gameplay is still there in games like Zelda, Pikmin, Mario... Actually IMHO, Nintendo is one of the only companies consistently producing innovating and good gameplay in these 3D times.

Nowadays people seem to like realistic 3D bloody crap more than oldskool 2D and better gameplay. It's just a phase I guess.

well, it has to stop some time otherwise it'd blow... even a balloon that's getting bigger goes 'pop' some time.

There's something similar with movies. Since Jurassic Park, computer generated images (CGI) became more and more important, from the marketing guru's point of view. That new techniques didn't always add excitement was proven by lame movies such as The Mummy etc. Luckily, the last few years, the directors stepped back from this, and created movies based on really great direction, light, sound, music, camera etc.

The same with games. With all 3d shooters I've the feeling that I'm a test-object walking in a 3d engine, instead of being the hero walking in an interesting world.

Luckily there are still games with 2D gameplay and just 3D graphics. Like R-type, Gradius, Contra, euuuhhmm... there must be others ^^;

Hmmm a list of games I liked on PC...
  • One of those Pinball Fantasy games/lookalike
  • Day of the Tentacle
  • Monkey Island 3
  • Need for speed 3
  • Need for Speed hot pursuit 2
  • Final fantasy 7
  • Metal Gear Solid (but still not as good as MG1 or MG2 )
  • YS Complete
  • A few of the first Wolfenstein/Duke3D/Doom clones
.... that's about it. How come I can mention over 100 games I liked (better) on MSX1? New games are not aiming at nice gameplay at all, I'm afraid. Storylines and music are mostly bad as well. It's just a bunch of high-spec-3D images and games that are too long and complicated to ''just play a bit and then get back to work".

I'm afraid the days of lousy-games are far from over... most companies have all-purpose game engines now that have 'proven' themselves and are to be exploited for the next couple of years... :/

I'm saying the same thing from a lot of time ago: 3D=shit. I laught a lot when I saw these Marios and Sonycs in 3D (they just killed the games), and when I saw Metal Gear Solid, I wanted to cry... hope Konami will never kill Gradius also!!

my point is.. how come that a large percentage of MSX1 and MSX2 (or other games from the eighties and early nineties) games are cool and most recent games just plain suck?
