Hey guys, this is my first post because now I finally have something TO post . Today I finalized the purchase of an MSX Turbo-R ST from Bas. I'm so excited, as this is only my second MSX, my first being a Yamaha CX5MII/128. I never had a floppy drive and I had no carts for it other then the usual Yamaha CX5M software carts. But I recently started a computer museum project (the page will be up in a month or two) and decided that it was time that I bought a REAL MSX. I'm so excited to be getting it. Bas says it's in near mint condition, so it's going to be great for my museum, but it will get plenty of use, don't you worry! I'm not one of those collectors who keeps everything behind glass, I think computers need to be used, otherwise there is no point in having them. I'll post some pics when it arrives. Any suggestions of some upgrades I should buy for it? It's already been upgraded to 512k of ram and Bas is sending me a spare drive belt. Is there any upgrade carts I should look into? I already emailed the guy who makes the Mega Flash ROM SCC looking to purchase one of those, but is there anything else I should get. Oh by the way, I'm glad to finally be a part of the community! |

Congratulations on your great purchase, Conrad. And welcome here on the MSX forum
Turbo-R computers expanded to 512kB should be enough for everyone! MegaFlashROM/SCC is a good purchase if you want to play downloaded MSX games on your real Turbo-R. Other than that, it has little use. It's a great way to gain experience in MSX gaming, that's for sure! |

That's exactly why I want to get the MegaFlashROM/SCC, for gaming including the games requiring the SCC chip. I really want to play that translation of SD Snatcher. I'm also interested in getting a mouse for my Turbo-R. Does anyone know where I might find one? Is there a project I could build to convert a PS/2 or serial mouse to my Turbo-R? Thanks in advance guys!

Sunrise CF-IDE or SD card by sinfox/Erikie are useful upgrades (in other words: mass storage for your MSX).
Mice: buy any MSX mouse, they are on eBay every now and then. It's not too useful though, unless you start to use drawing programs on your MSX.

I got the mouse thing sorted just now actually. Bas will send me one with my Turbo-R. Where can I get the Sunrise CF-IDE?

I found where to get the Sunrise. I had already bookmarked it, I just forgot about it. I will order that probably next month, since I've already just spent like 500 Canadian dollars on MSX Stuff |

I recommend you use a nice and fast SCSI hdd with a Mega-SCSI or Novaxis interface. The last one is not expensive and hard to get, but still uses fat12 only. The first one is expensive and hard to obtain, but can handle fat16 too. This configuration will bring you the fastest mass storage setup.

I would be more then happy to get a MegaScsi, but they only ship to Japan. I might actually try and use one of those japanese proxy purchasers to buy it. I am pretty sure that I could use one of them like shopping mall japan or something like that to buy it. If it works out well, I'll let other people know how to do it.

Better go for CF, because a physical harddisk is really not easy to use (noisy, power supply, easily broken, etc.) compared to a CF card (cheap, small, no noise).

Not to mention portable...
Old micros like the MSX, and flash storage are an ideal match. I wish it had been available around the time these machines were built.
Oh btw. another nice addition to your Turbo-R might be an MSX-Audio cartridge (Toshiba or Philips Music Module). Allows you to play those nice .MBM musics (or similar) with a mix of MSX-Music and MSX-Audio sounds. Shouldn't cost cost you an arm or a leg, either. |

Then you won't have maximum performance. HDDs aren't that noisy and the smaller ones are quite cheap too. I have a CF too, but only for some mobility reasons. The usage of a HDD is not more complicated than the use of a CF. |

It's not much more complicated, but connecting a HDD is a bit more complicated than just inserting a CF. But the biggest problem is the power supply you need and the extra space it takes.
