Oh, another detail.. the small boxes have the cartridge + manual inside a plastic bag, while in the bigger boxes they weren't...

I think it all had to do with costs back then. The Uk thought they could produce the boxes and manuals cheaper here, when they still also had to do the translations of the manuals. When it turned out that the Japanese could do the production for a lower price with the translated manuals (after the UK took care of the translations) and with smaller boxes, the whole production cycle went back to Japan again. To bad that when that shipment arrived, only MoG and a few others only hit the market in Spain (presumably). I guess that in other countries copies where spread massively already, so sales didn't justify buying the new shipment, with better boxes and colorful labels. My $0.02

Dunno about that Red Game Master box. That one doesn't fit in.

Seems like there is a small box version of Vampire Killer as well:

Let's see... a bunch of these very small boxes right now:

Game Master, Penguin Adventure, Vampire Killer, Maze of Galious, F-1 Spirit, Nemesis 3

did I miss any?

I'd say that Vampire Killer is a regular 'European release' box, like Nemesis2, Usas, Penguin Adventure etcetera etcetera. I just looks small compared to those Japanese releases. I'm pretty sure i.e. the Nemesis3 box is smaller than this Vampire Killer box.

Weren't all european releases in that period in small boxes? I had a Vampire Killer, Metal Gear and Nemesis 2 in the same type of packaging. Usas was as well.

You are right. That is the small version.

Here you can see three different Metal Gears:

yep, my nemesis 3 had just that transparent plastic inner box.

I have kept wondering about that mirrored image on smaller penguin adventure box.

I totally forgot about Green Beret which also comes in a small box. And to make it even more weird it is different size than previous small Konami boxes.

Here's my small box games:

There is also a disk version of the game, which comes in similar box, but the tape on the box reads DISC
