The Arcade Joystick - interesting failure mode

I own a couple of The Arcade Joysticks (2 fire buttons). They have always been my favorite. Now 2 of them have developed an annoying (but interesting) failure mode, which I don't understand.
The fire buttons are switchable on the bottom of the joystick in that they exchange functions (button 1 becomes 2 and vice versa). Now it seems that both joysicks only work properly with the switch on the back end. The first joystick loses it's 2nd fire button fuction when the switch is on the front and the second joystick loses the down function when the switch is on the front. All other functions keep working properly!
Does anybody know how this is caused and/or if there is an easy fix?

you needs to clean with alcohol the contacts of the switch-selector, or just an contact-cleaner spry, the hard is to reach the contacts itself, so, it needs to be disambled first.

Yesterday evening I "fixed" it by using the cord of one of these joysticks to put on another one that clearly had a defect cord. That worked, but I still have 2 defect joysticks, so since your an msx master I guess I will still try your suggestion Thanks!
I still don't really understand why it would work but frankly if it works I don't care.
