I am missing the option: I do not use emulation.
By wolf_ on September 14 2007, 22:53
then your usage of hardware hasn't changed, e.g. option 2

I use emulators and real hardware with a ratio of 50:50 I would say.
- Emulators are great, when you are developing or when your are not at home or especially when you have to debug something. It speeds up development a lot and gives you more freedom.
- Real hardware has that great spirit we all know and is the last instance for testing your new developments. So I voted for "used as much as before".

After discovering in internet the existence of MSX emulators two years ago, I started coding MSX again.

I had a TR in 1991, that was lost somewhere in my parents' house.

Last year I rescued my old TR, trying to make it work again, but its disk drive is broken
so it is almost unusable, and now again it is lost somewhere in my house (waiting for
my wife get rid of it).

I can say that emulation has increased my use of the real HW (i.e. once in 15 years instead of never)

Without emulation I would have never returned to MSX again. And de emu's make development much faster and easier. Especially when devving ROM's

Same with me: I returned to MSX, because of emulators. When I found out there were people emulating MSX, communities and everything, I decided to create my site... that was in 1999

Then I used both BrMSX and RuMSX to make/test my first MSX game "Show do Milhao" (Brazilian show like "Who wants to be a millionaire" ) - and took it to my first MSX fair (MSX Rio 2000) where Adriano let me run my game - still untested on real machines - on his tR

After that day, I left the meeting decided to have a real MSX again - and since that I've been using both emulators and the real thing to develop my games

I had no MSX anymore when I discovered emulation. Then later I purchased one again, and also quite a few game cartridges, but still kept using emulators more. The ideal solution for me came in the MSX Game Reader, which eventually led to me getting rid of the original MSX hw, but still having and using cartridges.

I had msx's between 1985 and 1991, and got back in 1998 with real hardware as I heard about msx.org.
Then, I discovered emulators at around 2000, and then got lot msx msx stuff again because I liked to develop on PC
softwares that would run on real msx hardware.
Since 2 year everything is in the cupboard because I thought the ocm would completly de-naturate the msx-spirit....
In fact few people have one...

I think it was about 10 years ago when it turned out so that in MSX newsgroups there were people talking more about emulation than people talking about real MSX usage... I absolutely hated that... expetially because at that time the MSX emulators really sucked and I was browsing the newsgoups with my MSX.

Now that we have OpenMSX and BlueMSX I'm not anymore that much against emulation but still many of my utilitys don't work with BlueMSX (tR DRAM mode is not emulated) and for example my MSX Sofware Corner demo still does not run correctly in any emulator... Anyway... the emulators are getting close... At the moment my feelings about emulation are pretty twisted... The truth is, that testing software on emulators is much more easy and without emulators we would not have this vivid MSX scene... Always good and bad things. Yet there is long way to the point where all of the development can be done on emulators.
