When I was younger and still a very active MSX user, I always thought that assembly would be too difficult for me. I don't think that would be a problem now anymore. Apart from that, programming is not the only thing you need to make something cool; you'll also need graphics and music and - what's most important - an audience.

BUT, I think we should not underestimate the alternatives like C. They are powerfull too.
With the main code in C and the use of assembly modules (decompression, music/sfx replayer, vpd i/o) you can more easily (read: easier to keep overview) create good programs. Especially games..... IIRC Nerlaska is C + assembly too.
