Scene Music Remake challenge 2

A while ago, MRC held the -then highly anticipated- Scene Music Remake challenge. With twelve entries, both contenders and audience were satisfied. Recently, people dug up the related forum thread, and the idea of doing the same challenge again began to linger in our minds.

As you are reading this, this challenge is now officially on again! The objective: recreate a song from a composer from our MSX scene using any equipment you can think of. The latter means that you can recreate a song using all your studio gear, and if you feel like hiring the London Symphony Orchestra and record them at Abbey Road, well, don't let us stop you! The challenge is not about remixing songs, e.g. simply running the original version through some effects. In addition, a composer can not remake one of his own songs. The results of the first edition are the best way to get the idea of this challenge.

Choosing a suitable song to rearrange might prove to be a challenge on its own. Lots of ideas can be found in our downloads section, in particular in the demo section and diskmagazine section. These contain classic songs from many years ago, but modern songs from MRC challenges are also interesting candidates. Additionally, perhaps you'd like to rearrange songs from the popular MSXdev games, released in the past few years.

The prize for the winning entry will be an MP3 cartridge, manufactured by Yobi and DD. The jury has yet to be announced. You can send in your entries to smr@msx.org until December 18th, 23:59 CET, preferably as 192Kbps MP3. Happy arranging!

to be a bit more precise: remaking is basically just playing the entire song again with different instruments.
Remixing is adding, altering and leaving out the original, basing rhe remix on the original (which can include sampling, adding extra instruments, or just completely cut the whole thing up) and turning it into something new.
So, if remixing (not slapping some effects on an existing track) is allowed, I'm in.
Nothing as boring as just following the orginal note by note, you might as well just play some midifile instead then .

Poke: Sure, you can send in remixes. Entries don't have to be exact note-by-note-remakes, so feel free to send in your interpretation of a scene tune! (or more )

Well, I prolly skip this one, for exactly those reasons.. or maybe I submit one symbolical tune after the deadline or so..

I'll put my energy into MSXdev'07, and some MRC duties since recently..

Huey: years ago, deadlines wouldn't have to be extended. Perhaps challenges aren't much needed anymore -originally they've been about boosting activity-. If so, we'll indeed call it a day. Perhaps ppl have no structural time anymore to create an entry?

@wolf: No doubt about the good intentions from everyone. And yes, We need to boost the MSX-scene activity. This competition is needed. But I also think that it is a good thing that MRC would make a clear statement about the deadline and keep it. Thats all.

And yes people have less time. But that doesn't have to imply less entries. But without any competitions I wouldn't be working my ass of every 5 minutes I can squeeze out of my spare time on an MSX project. (Even if we can't make the current MSXdev deadline (again))

Perhaps my previous post was a bit 'negative' (Must be the time of year -> too cold to ). It wasn't my intention to be nagging.
