MSX Nijmegen 2014 - reminder | MSX Resource Center

Next Saturday, the 25th of January the annual Dutch MSX fair in Nijmegen will be held. Apart from the listed stand holders there will also be an MSX themed quiz again and plenty of opportunity to catch up with fellow MSX users, followed by the traditional dinner afterwards. So make sure you go to the MSX fair in Nijmegen if you're able!

Here's a list of the participants:

openMSX Team - Demonstration of the current developing version of openMSX, all Laserdisc games, the latest developments and the debugger GUI. Also we'll be showing openMSX running on Android, GCW Zero and the Dingoo A320.
Bas Kornalijnslijper - Repairs, expansions, cables, parts, buy and sale of second hand MSX hardware.
WORP3 - Sale and promotion of the MIDI-PAC, showing the progress of our Orbit project and on request, displaying our Super Nintendo SD-Snatcher demo.
MSX Resource Center - Sale of MSX T-Shirts, Girlies and MSX mints. Yum!
The New Image - Demonstration of pseudoMSX. Sale of MSX merchandise and promotion of TNI software.
Raymond Hoogerdijk - Sale of MSX books, magazines, hardware and software.
MSX Club West-Friesland - Promotion and sale of MSX equipment, including books, magazines, software and hardware.
Bitwise - Distribution and demonstration of MSX games.
MSX Vriendenclub Mariënberg - Promotion of MSX Vriendenclub Mariënberg.
SymbOS - SymbOS demonstration/promotion.
MIF & Misc. stuff - Demo of real-time conversion from webcam to screen 2-12 on PC, screen 2 and 4 movies on MSX (maybe with sound...), demo of GMRUN and other MSX dev stuff.
TriloByte - Demonstration of TriloTracker music tracker. 'Hands on' with the new tracker and get help on getting started.
Nowind - Programming and fun with a Nowind interface.
Laurens Holst - Demonstration of the Glass Z80 assembler and a MIDI project.
Zemmix NEO - Erik Luppes shows his Zemmix NEO and plays some games.
SuperSoniqs - Sale of Modulon slotexpander, Playsoniq, MSX Audio expansion and demonstration of other SuperSoniqs products.

The fair is held in Wijkcentrum Hatert, Couwenbergstraat 22, Nijmegen, directions on how to get there can be found on the MSX fair Nijmegen 2014 website.

Entrance is now at the front end again, as all building refurbishment is finished. So, go in at the front, see the photo on the fair website. The entrance is in the corner on the right wall.

The back side is not open.

Just got home from Nijmegen too. It was strange to actually hear people talking about the MSX.

During the dinner I've promised to talk about some of my C related adventures on the MSX, but I'm exhausted right now.

Here's about two hours of video... My SD card went full without me noticing it... Did have to change the battery somewhere in the middle though and had some serious battle with the auto-focus (which was switched off) in the first clip...

It would be nice if the layout of the room wasn't roughly the same every year. One side of the room is always very quiet compared to the other side. It's not fair to the standholders there, especially the smaller ones at the back.

Anyway, we figured out why the StreetFighter 2 demonstration wasn't working. Basically a technicality that only pseudoMSX emulates correctly and both BlueMSX and openMSX get wrong, which the SF2 ROM depended on...

Had a great day yesterday, although time went so quickly. Didn't even talk with half the people I wanted to talk to. There just wasn't enough time. Big thanks to Manuel for organizing yet another succesful edition of Nijmegen!

I agree with GuyveR800 on the room layout. Something completely different would be nice in 2015. Then again, all stand holders could have commented on the layout before the fair. I suppose most (if not all) of them didn't. We all have a role in this.

As for developing on buggy emulators: I wouldn't exactly call openMSX and blueMSX buggy, they get the job done in the vast majority of MSX software. The more we push MSX to its limits, the more likely bugs are to show up. But they have to show up first before they can be fixed.

I personally prefer testing on the real thing, can't wait to finally get my NoWind set up. Other than that I don't see how developers have a choice right now, seeing that pseudoMSX isn't available anywhere afaik.

It was really great this year. Nice to talk to everyone but indeed, so little time. Synthesix is a very interesting project. The quiz by Ray & Ray was fun as always. Bought a tapedeck and some tape games. The webcam digitalisation on MSX thingie was cool. And I ended up being quite impressed with MoonSound Music Studio.

Thanks to Manuel for again organising this great event! And ofcourse to all participants and visitors.

If it were up to me, pseudoMSX would already be enjoying a public release, but not all team members agree on its readiness.

There are two kinds of emulators bugs:
1. MSX software does not work because of an emulator bug
2. an emulator bug that causes software to appear to be working, but won't work on a real MSX

In the early days of emulators (not just MSX, but other systems as well), the second was a huge problem, because developers would release software that would not work on the real hardware. And emulators would continue to be wrong because that software should run on it, right?!

Eventually most emulator authors wised up and started emulating the correct hardware behaviour, causing some software that never worked on real hardware to start failing on their emulators too.

So "the amount of software that works on an emulator" is a really poor measure of emulator quality. It is always the software that DOESN'T WORK on real hardware that is the true test of an emulator's quality.

In other words, making stuff work is easy, but making stuff fail accurately is hard.

I crossed the 'oversteek' (the new bridge north of Nijmegen) and visited the MSX fair as well. It was vey nice seeing so many MSX computer and all these people still enjoying their hobby.

I especially want to thank Raymond (Ray2day - we did not introduce ourselves, but I recognized him from the photo on his website) for demonstrating the Megaflashrom with SD. I'm realy going to order one of these on short notice....
