I'm a big fan of Tempest 2000 and Gridrunner++
Completly offtopic reaction
The MSX2 or 2+ with 256 or 384/448 KB RAM (Memory Mapper + VRAM) is
generic more nicer than a normal AMIGA with only 256KB RAM.
That is a worse compare. Only the first (and relative rare) Amiga1000 was shipped with 256Kb of ram. The mainstream Amiga500 and 2000 did have 512/1024Kb. It's like comparing a Amiga1000 with the NMS8220
And no, there was no MSX that was nicer to an Amiga. At the time the TurboR came in, the A1200 and A4000/040 were available (and they where a LOT more powerfull)
But, where MSX wins is gameplay. For some reason[...]

Maybe it's a Japanese reason. They're rather good at gameplay usually.... there aren't many Western shmups that touch the gameplay of the Japanese ones
I couln't agree more. That's why anno 2006 i still game more on the Playstation2 then Xbox/Xbox360.
It's just the Japanese games are more fun to play in singleplayer.

If only it had had a nice 14MHz R800 instead of that awful piece of motorola... *sigh* Ah well... If only, if shmonly... And no, I don't know what that's supposed to mean, it's too darn late...

And also a GFX9000 'graphic class'. the old v9958 could not cope in speed with the amiga blitter.
I think that
R800 @14Mhz+GFX9000+MoonSound is better than any amiga model.
R800 @14Mhz+GFX9000+MoonSound
well thats a nice setup but really not MSX compatible. I really don't thing GFX9000 has anything to do with MSX although it fits in the cart slot.

For a basic Amiga model.. maybe on the GFX/Sound part. Please note that a 68060 Amiga, or even a PPC amiga will kick that R800's ass big time.
And there are also some nice extensions available for the Amiga, so....
If you are going to make such comparisations, pleas make them fair -> "standard" MSX models vs "standard" Amiga models, and the same for extended ones.
But you shouldn't mind the fact that technically the Amiga is a better machine then the MSX. It's the games and the accesability that made the MSX! So for gameplay, I still prefer MSX. But if I wanted to show some jawdropping demos, the Amiga would win with mileslength.
But if I wanted to show some jawdropping demos, the Amiga would win with mileslength. The thing about jawdropping is that it is machine related. It is easy to make a demo that is simply not possible on msx1, but is on the other hand not impressive on, for instance, an msx2.
A demo is more than just a buncha routines, it's also something stylish, something near-videoclip'ish. 'Newskool', as ppl would describe it. MSX is mainly bound to oldskool stuff. So, comparing oldskool vs newskool is even to make a larger difference between MSX and other platforms.
... the GFX9000 is not completely unrelated to the MSX, though... it's the result of what was intended to become the next-generation VDP for the MSX (turboR). In one of the Japanese MSX Magazines of the recent years there's quite an article on the V9990 and the BASIC that was developed for its, unfortunately never released, MSX compatible predecessor.

Clock-for-clock? I doubt it'd be any faster on 8 or 16 bit operations. You can't get much faster than the 1-cycle pwnage the R800 has going on. Of course it's not really fair to compare a 32bit CPU to an 8/16bitter. Having said that, I'm sure a 3GHz R800 programmed in assembly would kick the average PC's ass in practice. Heck, add a nice FPU and maybe some kind of way to extend the address range and it could dabble with the best of 'em!
