Hello,

I´m currently using a MMC/SD as mass storage and I´m planning to change for one of those two.

What´s the advantages of each one? Specs seems very similar, MFR apparently handles .DSK better and Carnivore2 can add FM to computer who don´t have it?

Any help is appreciated. :-)

MFR has SCC+ and Carnivore2 cannot handle SCC+ at the same time as other functions

I have a MFR(www.msxcartridgeshop.com) and a FM-PAK (https://www.8bits4ever.net/) on an Panasonic a1fx

The carnivore has a bigger mem mapper... but how big do you want the mem mapper to be? :)

Carnivore 2 supports CF. Those cards are harder to get by. With the Sunrise CF interface these cards are not hot swappable. I'd like to know how that goes with Carnivore 2.
Personally I favor two slots. One permanent card and one to do some data exchange with the PC. Carnivore has 1 slot.
I haven't listened to the latest firmware upgrade, but a while ago some of those cartridges were compared for their scc sound. Back then Carnivore 2 was way behind. But that is probably fixed/will probably be fixed.
It could be good to compare the contacts of both cartridges as well. MFR has golden contacts. (some older) Carnivore 2 has tin. It's what you favor, but I don't want tinned cartridges.
It would be more fair to compare the newest versions of both. I just don't know how much Carnivore 2 improved. MFR is rock solid.

In this thread, it was explained to me that the SCC+ soundchip is always there, but without RAM just like on the MFRSCC+SD. What isn't possible to use at the same time as the other functions is the "Konami Sound Cartridge" mode, which means the SCC+ chip coupled with 128KB of RAM to run the both the original Snatcher and SD-Snatcher without any modification. And that this was only necessary because there were no available subslots for that RAM.

Since the MFRSCC+SD also features an SCC+ chip without RAM, I would say there's a draw when it comes to the normal mode.

CF cards in the Carnivore2 are NOT hot-swappable unlike the MFR.

On the plus side for the Carnivore2 is the option to add your audio-out, this you have to do yourself, but the PCB is prepared for it. I have it and can then have a more clean sound if I want to.
There is a way to add audio-out to the MFR, but it is not prepared like the C2.

MFR has gold-plated contacts. This is better for cartridge slots.

The MFR is a bit prepared. There are audio labeled pads on the pcb. Seeing the work Luppie put into it it's not a simple walk in the park though.

Luppie showed me a few weeks ago how it worked, it is a little more work than just popping an audio-out on it.

i think you might need to add some preamp circuit. or use an audio mixer with mic preamp built-in - then you can just pop an audio out of it (like i did, i already had a mixer btw so it works fine with just taking signal from board)
