My Sony HBF1XDJ diskdrive shows a weird situation.
When I boot the computer without a disk inserted, the drive does the initial spin, I hear the beep and then disk basic gets loaded. When the drive starts the second spin - the one just before entering disk basic - it will not stop spinning and the computer freezes.
If I insert a disk with an autoexec.bas on it and reset the computer the disk gets booted. There is nothing strange going on then.

I've talked about it with Omega. He encountered something similar with some Panasonic computers. Ready/disk change. Please reseat the cables firmly. I did so and nothing changed. A spare diskdrive did the trick, but it's not the solution because that drive won't fit.

Is there someone who encountered this as well and knows what's the malfunction on the diskdrive?

I would recomment to resolder the points on floppy drive's connector - just heat the iron and put some more solder on each pin connection. It might be the same issue i had few times - with joystick connector, with RGB connector, etc - old soldering might become loose even if you can't spot or see it. Might be that your DRDY pin gets loose. This doesn't take too much time, and if it doesn't help then you can look further

Thanks Pencioner for thinking with me. I did just measure the solidity of the pins. One probe on the pin and the other somewhere furter on the board. Wiggling the probe on the pin does not affect the continuity tone.
I did think of the pcb on the connector cable, but that one should not need checking as a spare drive works without issues.

Meanwhile I replaced the diskdrive with another original drive which works. I do however still like to know what the malfunction of the old drive is.
If it's something fixable, the drive might have some reuse value for me or maybe someone else.

Is this a drive with a belt?

Yes, and the belt is good. It functions normally when a disk is inserted.
I just received a mail with a possible culprit: The microswitch that checks if a disk is in or not. That could be stuck in "in" position. I'll measure that asap.

That sounds very plausible.

I advise you to change the belt

The belt is good really. The drive works top notch if there's a disk in it. It only gives a hickup if there's no disk in it.

Sent me your adress, and I sent you a belt.
You can test this for free, because you do not now a new one and mostly it looks like it works...
And when you test it, please share it here. Maybe you are right.

I have a complete replacement drive with spare belts. To find the culprit I'll go check the belt, but first I'll go find the microswitch which is suspect.
