I’m currently logging the estimated value of all my games, and am having a hard time narrowing down the value of my MSX collection. eBay sold listings and pricecharting are giving me vague information, and some of my games have no listing on either site. Can I get your opinion on what my collection MIGHT be worth? I promise I’m not trying to toot my own horn.

Every game is its Japanese release and is 100% complete in box:

Antarctic Adventure
Dragon Slayer IV (MSX 2)
F1 Spirit
F1 Spirit 3D Special
Game Master 2
Ganbare Goemon
Goonies, The
Gradius 2
Hi no Tori
Hyper Rally
Hyper Sports 2
King Kong 2
King’s Valley II (MSX 2)
Konami’s Ping Pong
Konami’s Soccer
Konami’s Tennis
Maze of Galious, The
Metal Gear
Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake
Nemesis
Nemesis 3
Parodius
Penguin Adventure
Pennant Race
Pippols
Q*Bert
Quarth
Romancia: Dragon Slayer Jr
Salamander
Sky Jaguar
Snatcher
Track & Field II
TwinBee
Usas
Vampire Killer
World Golf II
Xak II: Rising of the Redmoon
Xak Precious Package: The Tower of Gazzel
Yie Ar Kung Fu II

Well, any MSX games you have are priceless if you love MSX. So keep them Smile
I can play all those games already so If I had to pay you wouldn't get much. But every person is different. I wouldn't sell my Salamander or change it for your complete list even if there is another one on it, cause it's MY Salamander Tongue So... prices are relative.

Prices depend on the content/packaging quality.

Doesn’t answer my question. I’m looking for the rough market value of each of my games.

why? are you going to use your collection as collateral for a mortgage or something? Smile

The value of something that has no practical purpose is merely emotional, therefore it depends on individuals with affinity to MSX willing to buy. Your collection is not an asset my friend.

I suggest you try to auction some items with a reserve, to find out.

Price of vintage games are fully relative to buyers.
From a gaming point of view, these games are not worth more than 5€ (if you compare them to games you can find on PC for example).
It is the nostalgia or the pleasure of collecting that will make the prices potentially very high.
For example, I could put 100€ in a King's Valley II which is my favorite MSX 2 game while I will never put more than 20/30€ in other games which are however much more wanted (like a Metal Gear or Castelvania).
Evaluating your collection is therefore meaningless in absolute terms. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Try searching for a purchase price list from a shop like this one.

Many titles have a kaitori ("purchase") page on suruga-ya which may be some kind of minimum price for a complete item in good condition. I believe this is the price suruga-ya offers to those selling their copies to the shop, though I never sold there. Those prices are always less than what suruga-ya charges for the item of course, but may help build a "liquidation estimate". I think value here is dependent on what purpose you'll use the figure for too. Insurance has very different criteria for value than you might choose if you are establishing auction reserves you might pick if you need to liquidate the collection to meet some other more essential need. If you want to trade parts of the collection with parts of someone else's collection on an equal-value basis "market value" might be far less relevant than the value of the items in the eyes of your trading partner

Hi!
Let me say this: Some month ago somebody sold Space Manbow on this place for 300 Euro. Some weeks ago the same game was sold on german ebay for 168 Euro. Complete of course! Some sellers from japan have ridicules and totally crazy prices. Greetings!! Wink

I like to know what my stuff is worth. I'm interested in that sort of thing.

If a type of goods is not often traded its value tends to become fairly undefined. Really it's whatever someone else who is able to transact is willing to pay for it that the current owner is also willing to part with it for. So "worth" here perhaps only makes sense for a rarely-traded MSX program in the context of a particular auction, sale, or trade

Maybe it's best to consider as its worth to you the amount you would be ready to spend to replace it should it become damaged or lost? You might also choose to include in this a monetary value you consider equivalent to the amount of time you would need to spend finding and buying a replacement
