Microcabin Co., Ltd. is a company that started its activities in 1982 as a software developer. In fact the company history reveals it was officially founded in 1981 and even earlier, being still present within the computer world as a subsidiary company of AQ Interactive Co., Ltd.

Many and excellent titles were produced in the Microcabin offices. We, the MSX users, were lucky to have this company supporting our beloved home computer since its birth and providing us many hours of fun since the mid 80s. However all changed when the MSX-MUSIC sound extension was introduced as a standard of sound in 1987. Since then Microcabin revolutionised the MSX world in the same way Konami did with the introduction of the SCC soundchip.

Xak: The Art of Visual Stage, Xak II: Rising of the Redmoon, Xak: The Tower of Gazzel, Fray, Illusion City, The Tower of Cabin, Princess Maker, Final Fantasy and Daisenryaku II: Campaign Version were high quality products with stunning FM soundtracks. Back in those days there were no words to express what we felt when playing those games with such a impressive sound, the game experience improved considerably without a doubt. From that moment on, Microcabin became the reference and for many of us, no other company was able to take full advantage of the MSX-MUSIC sound ever.

That said, it is a pleasure to introduce this special gift that the MSX Resource Center brings to you all today, an interview with the Microcabin music staff! We started working on this project several years ago, once Yukiharu Urita kindly accepted our proposal (he even made the English translation!). A project that our team carefully prepared with a lot of enthusiasm but unfortunately it was halted for different reasons, the global situation... Now after a long wait it's finally here!

At first the possibility of interviewing the whole team (Yukiharu Urita, Tadahiro Nitta and Yasufumi Fukuda) was very close but at the end only Tadahiro Nitta was able to answer the questions. It is worth mentioning that Yukiharu Urita was supporting him remembering those good old days.

As the Microcabin's corporate philosophy states now "Think together, create together, prosper together, rejoice together" so together we did it! This is our contribution to the MSX scene and chiptune lovers in general. Please enjoy this journey to the past reading those lines.

The MSX Resource Center team would like to express our deepest gratitude to Yukiharu Urita and Tadahiro Nitta for
kindly accepting this interview and share their experiences with the MSX community around the world.

Also thank you so much to user fukenko for his valuable help. This interview would not have been possible without his support in the text translation.

Thank you, Mr. Nitta, Mr. Urita and MRC for bringing this piece of greatness to the community. I very much enjoyed reading this! Music from Microcabin is still my #1, and there are many occasions these days where I browse to vgmtunes to re-enjoy these pieces of art during office hours. Kudos from a fan.

Domo arigatô gosaimashita Nitta-san, Urita-san, Pac and MSX crew, for this wonderful interview! It was such a joy to read it.

And feel very welcome back to composing your gems for the MSX. I was flabbergasted by the quality of Nitta-san's new album, "Oasis in 2op". Please keep them coming and, if you can, please also release them in a format that we can enjoy on our good old MSXs.

You were the inspiration of a generation when you squeezed the "impossible" out of the humble MSX sound hardware, leaving even western hardware with much more powerful FM soundchips like the OPL3 eating the dust. In that regard, we should in fact call you Nitta-sensei, and Urita-sensei.

I was lucky to visit Microcabin in 1992 (1st trip to Japan) and in 1995 in Yokkaichi. I had also visited T&E Soft in Nagoya and Konami but of course the warmest welcome was at Microcabin. Still rare to be able to enter the company as in The Tower (?) Of Cabin. I remember Mrs Nitta, Nakatsu, Urita and Fukuda in particular

Very cool, yet have to read it Smile

But.. Where's Ryuji Sasai (Xak I/II) in this story?

Oh.. if Mr. Nitta is reading this: the 'scene' would love to see an ('official') composer breakdown of those OSTs.. 😄

You are right, most of them (practically all Smile ) come from you. This adventure started back in 2017-2018 and I personally never gave up, now or never. Finally we could achieve this goal and I'm so happy. Thanks to Meits and hamlet for helping me adding the final touches.
