Hi, All-.

Recently i've found that colecovision games have a quality a little better than the average of msx1 games. For example it's hard to find a horizontal scrolling game for msx1 because of vdp limits, but there are some titles for coleco that overcome the vdp limits.

So i'm interested in anyone could get me some links to screen shot video or other material about the colecovision game list .

look at Matt Patrol (1984) (Atarisoft)

it has fine 3 layer scrolling !!
It would be incredible for msx1!

Its a nice game indeed. Shouldn't be that hard to port though. just change the io ports for the VDP to $98 and $99 instead of $be and $bf. Then do something for the PSG. Think I read something somewhere how to port the SN76489 to AY8910.
There are no technical reasons why coleco games couldn't be ported to MSX. The VDP is the same and any limitations the MSX has is on the Coleco as well.

Some (actually, I think 1/3 of the Colecovision games) of the games work well in the colecovision emulator for msx made by Marcel de Kogel 11 years ago... http://www.komkon.org/~dekogel/mission.html. I use it for example, for playing Tapper and Star Wars.

on the average, it's clear that game makers do a better work and there was more effort when coding for coleco than for msx1, despite the almost identical hw.
Again, this confirm me that msx1 was a under-pushed machine in the old days...:(

I agree. In fact the MSX has more resources than the coleco. Both more ram and rom. I think the big problem with MSX is the bios actually. I think many MSX1 games used bios and thats a big performance killer. MSX would have been much better off without the bios imo, at least the VDP part of the bios.

Take a look at the code of the game artrag mentioned, and you'll see an example of very well coded video handling. Especially good for its time I must say.

dvik: IMHO, the use of bios had its root in the low effort to get a good quality in games.
Makers have ever considered a msx1 a small platform so why take time to search for optimized way to do stuffs?

Galaxian is a good example of what it could look like on MSX, the difference in graphical quality is huge.
(gameplay wise, the MSX port is alright)
