I'm getting an FS-A1WX and uh, now I'm scared to do the 512K RAM upgrade. It has 256K though, so it should still run a lot of stuff.

How easy is it to build an Ese-SCC cartridge? I know finding a game cart with an SCC in it is going to be a world of pain, but where would I find a 512K SRAM chip?

Wait, does the FS-A1WX come with 256K by default or 64K by default? Looks like this page is wrong, and I AM going to have to do the upgrade. I have the chips and everything, but it makes me hell of nervous that the previous guy who did it somehow toasted his machine despite following all the directions.

The page is wrong, it comes with only 64kB RAM. See close up photos like this. There was no MSX2+ machine at all which came with more than 64kB RAM.

Well, it's somewhat reassuring to know that I couldn't have done too much better.

The FS-A1WX,WX and WSX use the exact same motherboard right? Only with different sockets populated? From the photos they seem somewhat different. Maybe there's different motherboard revisions floating around?

Has anyone ever done this hack successfully on an FS-A1WX?

Instead of buying an MSX2+, many people upgraded their already expanded MSX2 to MSX2+. But at some time, V9958 chips were rare, so it was a bit expensive.

Well, I guess this guy managed to pull it off OK.

Just got my MSX2+. Did it myself (the 256K mod) and wow, same results! I'm not only not getting a screen, but I'm also not getting any lights. Gonna check for a short and then reverse the modification. I did check everything with a multimeter, so yeah, I would say that that guide is dangerously wrong and should not be used to upgrade a WX until such time as it can be corrected.

By the way, the guide said that there'd be a resistor at position J2; it was wrong. There was no resistor at J2 on my machine. It said to remove it anyway, so I went ahead anyway.

Hi,

I've upgraded some Panasonic WX/WSX to 512kb, using the niga tutorial. It works fine, but be carefull or your panasonic will die Sad

Yup, looks like there was a TRACE at J2. And I didn't cut it. So all this time the machine had +5V shorted to GND in the memory area. Fantastic!

I don't suppose the machine will still work after having had 5V shorted?

Is your machine dead or alive?
