openMSX 0.10.0 now in Google Play Store

For those who are interested in openMSX for Android: it's now even easier to get the latest openMSX (0.10.0) on your ARM based Android device: it has just become available on Google Play Store. So, go to the Play Store and install openMSX 0.10.0!

The fire buttons' functions are unclear, even if you change the theme to something more normal (though that helps; I chose the simple one since at least it gives numbers to the buttons; the default sun symbols are very unclear).

I guess it would be possible to create custom themes? It would be nice to have a D-pad layout that's somewhat MSX related, e.g. something based on that Panasonic gamepad.

Otherwise it's great, though

By the way; I guess the XelaSoft wiki needs an update... it says years active "1990-2007", but it seems active on Google Play ;-)

yeah we really need to start doing that. Android is not made for stuff like that.... that shouldn't be an excuse though

Got a Android Gaming Tablet (Postman brought it while I was attending the MSX Fair in Nijnmegen) for my daughter.
It's the JXD S7800 and it has hardware buttons

Now I'm looking if it is possible to switch of the OSD buttons. I already set transparency to 'Invisible' and size to Tiny, but still they are visible. How can I switch them off ?

Also it's almost impossible to teach my daughter (she is 9) how to load ROM files. I saw a feature on an other emulator that has the option when a ROM is loaded, to make a shortcut/icon on the homescreen of Android to start the game with one click. Is it possible to have these kind of shortcuts for OpenMSX ?

How can you control your MSX game without the buttons? (Assuming you mean the on-screen controls with "OSD buttons".)

You can probably make such shortcuts (I don't know enough about Android to be more specific), but it's not something that openMSX can help you with (currently, at least).

With the buttons on each side
(so an option to hide the firebuttons and the joystick/cursors - but still an option to popup the keyboard or a keymapping to popup the keyboard)

To bad for the shortcuts thing. I guess there are also no plans for a kind of Android Launcher B-)

Tried it the easy way by opening a ROM file on my Android Device (from explorer) and Selected 'Open With' and Selected 'Open MSX' I expected the Open MSX would had a default action (mount SlotA), but unfortunatly OpenMSX launched without starting the selected ROM. Is it possible to pass commandline options to the android version (like the PC version) linke: OpenMSX -CART %romfile%

@Manuel Why couldn’t openMSX offer the option to add a home screen icon?

Such an icon would fire an intent containing the ROM file to load in its metainfo fields. However these intents can not be easily configured manually, only through certain (rather advanced) apps from the marketplace. And openMSX would still need to offer the appropriate intents, I don’t know if it does now. A menu option in openMSX would be best.

Re. on-screen controls, you can also connect USB controllers to Android.

You can disable on screen keyboard as follows:
1) Launch openMSX
2) Tap "Change device configuration" button on the SDL splash screen (its visible for 3 seconds)
3) Tap "On-screen keyboard" button in the "Device configuration" menu
4) Scroll down until you see the button "Remap on-screen controls"
5) Uncheck the check-box for the buttons you want to hide. Probably you want to keep "Text input button" enabled (in order to keep the virtual keyboard) and disable the Joystick and Button 1 until Button 6

I will investigate what can be done for a future version of openMSX to automatically launch a ROM from the launch screen. I like the idea.

Though, one tip to make it already easier for your daughter to re-start her favorite games using a visual menu (instead of having to rely on the name of the ROM): you can yourself launch openMSX one time, insert the first ROM using the on-screen menu and then save the state (also using the on screen menu). The save-state contains a screenshot of the game as it was at the moment that you save the state. You can then do the same for the her other favorite games (you can have up to 10 save states). After that, you can then teach your daughter to use the 'load state' menu to find back her favorite games

Thank you Alex, your 1st answer is perfect. I got exactly what I want.
Your 2nd answer gives us the option to let her play a bit more easely the games that we preconfigure for her.
