Talking about design, there are games with incredible hw sprites like Metal Gear, Usas or Hinotori where I really don't think that sw sprites could improve the graphics but could deteriorate the frame rate.

I was also thinking just today that Aleste 2 is also an example of great looking MSX2 sprites.

I think that Valis II is not a good example for sw sprites since its frame rate is really low for an action game. I should prefer hardware sprites as first Valis where you get a full screen scroll at a really stunning speed.

Actually I always thought Valis I was a bit too fast for my taste Smile.

@ Grauw: Chaotic and weird, mainly. Smile
This might help if you'd ever feel like trying to beat the game:

I wrote one for Valis II as well:

@ syn: It's hard, but not impossible. Smile Did you know you can cheat by temporarily ejecting the gamedisk if you die?

I’m sure a lot of people would like to see some new MSX2 games, me included, so… you can make one? Smile

already seen this, the msx scene has proved to be oriented to msx1 generation even for games not possible on msx1 at a decent level. So does not worth the effort.

About sw sprites + scrolling (like ys, fs and so on) the vdp does not have enough power to do a full scroll by brute force so it's better to use the power for sw sprites. look at bombaman and see a true nice sprite, not possible with hw one.!

Im planning to make a v9958 game with hw scroll and a mix of hw sprites and some sw sprites. I'll have to test/figure out how to do it though (since im just an asm newbie).

I think eta till release of said game: maybe in 3-5 years Tongue

PingPong must've missed some poll results.
MSX users are desperately wanting MSX2 or higher games, but for some reason developers are not making them.

In that sense the #msxdev Compo is excellent because it allows all MSX games to compete.

Maybe people want to play msx2 games, but instead they think its too easy to make one and instead code on msx for the sake of challenge/masochism?

@ TheSpecialist: I think that is weird, actually. There are so many talented coders and gfx artists in the scene. Ofcourse, there is the life/job/kids factor with the general age MSX fans have reached now. I sometimes think, MSX1 or MSX2 is kind of a regional thing.

@ syn: It's probably the challenge, yes. But to be honest, I adore MSXdev, but I fail to understand the point to limitations such as maximum ROM size.
