I played Shark Hunter at my friend's house, but I don't remember my first opinion of it.

River Raid on our first Philips VG8235 with green screen.
My dad told me I had to press space to start. He never told me I could kill enemies and bridges with it.
So I never got to stage 2 Big smile

I think it was Vampire Killer at a friend from school, it was a cracked version without the music....
It was on a Philips VG8235 machine, he had alot of games on 3M disk's. His father work at the time at 3M.
He come allways with boxes full of "bad" 3M disk's with MSX games.
Later I got this his Philips VG8235 with all the 3M disks Wink

The first MSX game I saw and played was Video Pack's Rambo. It was at a friends (acquaintance) house. Later when I got my own MSX2 computer I think the first games I played were Road Fighter, Galaga, King's Valley and Metal Gear and Vampire Killer.

Vampire Killer was not the first computer game I played but my first MSX game. It was a head above the competition including IBM PC and has made me a fan of Konami (to this day).

My Philips vg8020 came with two tapes, Blagger and Grand National in May '85. Black and white TV. It was surprising the first time to load a tape with the data recorder, the noise and the green light. And the three cartridges I had to buy because I loved a first sight were Konami's Football, Goonies and Knightmare during the next year. What a pity don't have photos of those days.

The first big ones I remember are Athletic Land and Circus charlie.

I seriously start to wonder, the Athletic player is much bigger than mario malaika.
It's the usual 2 sprites per scanline, and instead of a mono ball you could jump over another whole such big dude without flicker.

Maybe in the end it is not always the scanline budget but the vram pattern budget!
With vram used as just a cache, one could have much bigger things.
Who knows, maybe the main reason for the Rastan desaster is vram pattern size?

Look, a very nice sprite in "one sprite per scanline" budget:
