Mark Smith, former editor of the Konami Software Club fanzine has agreed to do a Q and A session, similar in format to the one we did with Dennis Hemmings a few years ago. If we post the questions in this thread, then I can pass them to Mark for answering, I shall submit the questions to Mark mid July.

The link above tells you a little more about Mark, and shows him at work, although I think it is just a pose for the camera?

Ok, lets get this started.

Q- can you talk us through the process of creating a game walkthrough in the mid 80s, did konami provide assistance? What was the most difficult game to map? What was the timescale?

Q- Hi Mark, you probably don't remember me but I had the privilege of doing my work experience with yourself and Dennis back in 1988 (I think ?!). With regards with working with Konami, did you approach them with the idea of a newsletter ?
Many thanks, Al.

Valkyre, I thought you spoke about this at the Retro exhibition? Be good to have it in the Q and A

Yeah, Mark mentioned a bit about this on saturday and it was very interesting so i thought that i would try to get a bit more out of him in the Q and A and let everyone enjoy reading it! I will add a few more questions before the deadline.

Q: please introduce yourself to us non-UK MSX users:
- how did you get into MSX?
- how did you get to work at Konami UK?
- what did you do exactly at Konami, regarding MSX and also before and/or after that?
- how did you perceive MSX?
- what kind of memories do you have on MSX? Good feelings? Bad feelings? Or just some work thing?
- what kind of MSX machines did you have at home and at work?
- what were the MSX related activities of Konami UK?
- and of course, the classic: what's the story of Green Beret? Smile

Q - Hi Mark, Konami quit in the 80s with Msx Games in Europe. Do you remember that there was a Game announced for Europe which Konami stopped "in the last second"?

Q- in the period before konami stopped their support of msx in europe, had the sales figures dropped significantly? or was it a case of them moving on to a bigger more lucrative market?

Q: I am interested to know more about getting british programmers converting Konami arcade titles for MSX. Any info would be great to know.

Q: Which persons Konami contacted to get U.K. programmers?

Q: Or did somebody hint about suitable team for MSX conversions? Who?

Q: Who were the persons behind the idea of making british conversions for MSX and C64, Spectrum, Amstrad?

Q: What kind of support Konami gave to the selected MSX programmer team? Did Konami let the programmers play selected arcade game? Or gave photos or video showing gameplay of Green Beret arcade game? Any advices or demands written on a paper? Or did programmers have to do all research by themselves?

Q: It sounds like the selected MSX programmer team wasn´t working in Konami owned flat. It also sounds like Konami had problems with that team even before Green Beret was finished. Did they ever answer Konami´s calls or were they unwilling to show or tell anything how well the work was going on? If the latter was the case, somebody at Konami UK probably had forgotten he´s the boss and he has the right to demand answers from the unwilling workers. Smile

Q: Also, please tell us, what unreleased Konami arcade titles were originally planned to be converted for MSX by british programmers? Imagine Software converted Konami titles for Commodore 64, Spectrum and Amstrad. Certain converted Konami titles weren´t seen on MSX at all.

Q: Did you actually see MSX Konami game "Jailbreak"? Was Jailbreak made in Japan or in U.K.? Jailbreak was published for other computers in U.K., I wonder if it was planned to be programmed by the same team who did MSX Green Beret and that´s why it was dropped?
