Hello!I am new to the forum and i'd like to buy an msx2 computer to play "Metal gear 2 Solid Snake".
Could you suggest me a list of best european MSX brands/models (since i live in Greece)?
I d be grateful if you suggest me cheap online stores except ebay.
Thank you!

Hi,

First of all, welcome.

now, some facts: There are just a few MSX 2+ models on market (exactly 7) and none of them were released on Europe. BUT, you can find them quite easily because several were imported from Japan to Europe (and still are nowadays). So, if you do really matter about an european MSX computer, you will want a MSX2 from Philips, or some specific models of Sony, Mitsubishi or Toshiba. If I were to buy and european MSX2, I would go for the Philips 8245, or either a Philips 8255 or a Sony F700P if I wanted a machine with separate keyboard. But I am no expert on these machines, since I'm used to Japanese (and brazilian) machines.

Also, If ebay is not an option, just scroll to the bottom of msx.org home page and you'll find our bussiness-oriented forum, where you can buy anything from the other users... but note you will deal with the users directly, msx.org does not intermediate anything. (this means msx.org is no store, won't take any money, won't deliver anything to anyone and won't ask no one to return your cash if you have second thoughts)

Maybe you should just read *this* and then return with some questions. B-)

In my opinion the first questions would be, how do you plan to play the game? Do you own an original copy or a flashrom cartridge like MegaflashROM SCC? Otherwise forget the idea of buying an MSX2 just for that. You probably would need an extra investment (memory expansion + SCC cartridge) and the experience wouldn't be satisfactory just running the game into RAM.

Good point.

Also the game is in japanese. You would need the patched rom file. Unless you speak the language.

I happen to be from Greece too. Where you from?

The only way to play the game in english with the original game means you'll have to break open the cartridge, cut/solder the game rom out and solder a patched flashrom/eprom back in its place.

Trust me. That sucks.

Or just go here: http://www.file-hunter.com/MSX/SolidSnake.html
Set the thing to full screen and enjoy ;-)

Another option would be to download an emulator (ie OpenMSX or BlueMSX) and run the romfile in those.

I guess you are aware that a complete original copy will probably cost more than an MSX2 computer, close to an MSX2+ assuming you are lucky and find one for sale. A loose cartridge will be cheaper but even so it won't be easy.

Beware, there are fake cartridges out there with an english version on it, some you can recognise because the konami logo is the old logo from pre-1986 and otherwise you can see that the label doesn't have rounded corners and shines too much.
Plus keep in mind that you need a floppy 3,5" disk to save (was there a hdd save version out there?? )
