I am not responsible for MSXdev anymore, therefore it is up to the MSXdev team to decide. But let me express my personal opinion:

- It is called MSXdev, neither MSX2dev nor MSX2+dev. I guess it is quite descriptive about the goals, isn't it? Wink
- MSXdev is just an initiative: if someone feels that there's something else to be done, go on: organize it yourself. Big smile This could be more effective than trying to change the rules of an already consolidated competition.

Once again: I'm not related whatsoever to MSXdev anymore, I'm just expressing my feelings about it, just as any other MSX user could do.

MSXdev should stay MSX1 (but it might be a good idea to have 32/64k RAM and allow 2MB ROM ..oooOOLD DISCUSSION ^____________^ )

for MSX2, do "MSXdev2"

Eek!

I don't care about the memory anymore.
We decided to go for 16 kb RAM and 128kb ROM no matter what the rules will be in the next edition of MSXdev.

As for MSX2 we musn't underestimate the power of MSX1. Just look at the MSXdev games. The quality is still rising.

yes, but MSX2 can still look better .. Tiles-wise quite a bit can be archived on MSX1, but sprites are truly a pain

If you talk about MSX2 or superior then you are not talking about MSXDev.

The people who want to create something for MSX2 or "superior" just do something like MSX2Dev or whatever and don't spoil the original MSXDev. Giving bonus for other MSX music chips, for instance, is something negative (obviously just my opininion) and can spoil the initiative of "beginners" who want to create something for MSX. Some people can be like scared because of the high expectations.

When I think of MSXDev'07 I just can think of any kind of limitation within MSX (1); ROM, RAM. It would be a pity to finish with the pure MSX (1) competition.

If I have the time to present a game for this MSXDev'06, it will be an exclusive 1-bit key-click music/sound game. And, obviously, not because of the new spectations, which to me has nothing to do with the original spirit of the MSXDev.

Regards,

Alfonso.

Well, Dionisio, you can do a "double version", like "INK" from Ink Team or better, if you play "Carverns of (difficult Tongue) Titan" on MSX 2, you have MSX 2 colours.

And also, think that a great game like Operation Wolf is a genuine MSX 1 game, but if you put a FM PAC, you have great FM MUSIC, and I think it's not anything against the MSXDev spirit AT ALL. You can put some minimal rules for all the games (run at all MSX, for example), but I think that you can't put the "maximal" limits.

And why having freedom for extras it's against MSXDEV spirit? With this year's rules, you can do perfectly every game that were made for MSXDEV 03-04-05. So what's the problem? If you do a game for MSXDEV, you'll be able to play in every MSX you have, and if it has a extra, and you have this extra hardware, you will have some more "features", but the game remains the same.

Yours,

Most important MSXdev is triggers new people to make MSX games. If we set the standard too high (MSX2) than they might consider not to enter.

The MSXdev beign an 'basic' MSX1 system competition made me return to the MSX scene and finaly make the game I always wanted to make.

Please let's keep focusing on inspiring new people to make games and making it easier to start for new MSX-ers.

The last still needs attention.......(resource database???)

I think the part of the game that is being judged should meet the miminum system requirements, i.e. what's stated on the rules page:
* CPU: Zilog Z80 running at 3.58 Mhz
* VDP: TMS9918/TMS9928 or compatible video processor
* PSG: AY-3-8910 or compatible sound chip
* Cassette interface: 1200/2400 baud
* RAM: 16 KB located in page 3 (C000h-FFFFh)
* VRAM: 16 KB

Then I think the cart itself should be limited in size as well. It was a bit unfortunate that Matra wasn't part of the competition from the beginning. Imo it would have been very fun to see all entries be 32kB and potentially available on real carts.

As dioniso said, I don't like the idea of giving bonus points to extra features, like R800 or FM music. These extra features are simply not available on a standard MSX1 and shouldn't be judged. I hope '07 rules will be a bit stricter than '06 in that sense.
