The topic title says it all.

Our new russian member johnny10 just got his so-called "student MSX2 machine", which is Yamaha YIS503IIIR with 128M RAM, 128M VRAM, network module and, of course, no disk drive.

He is able to load (either via cassette port or network module with MSX Link):

- basic programs
- binary files (this includes multi-bin versions of megaroms)
- ROMs (auto)converted to binaries by tools like WAVeR, MicroWAVer
- .cas files, converted by CAS Tools

The question is:

are there any impressive demos that johnny10 can run ?

The only candidate I can think of is my multi-bin version of MG2:SS demo cartridge, but without SCC it's not so funny as it can be, so the demo should use PSG only.

Any suggestions ?

I think he can run Windows with that kind of specification.
On a more serious sidenote: I think he's very well capable of running the Lyra 2 demo. Try Yahoo!ing for it SmileHannibal

@[D-Tail]: I think he's very well capable of running almost everything, if he only had a DISKDRIVE Wink

Of course, he can also try any of the CAS images dumped. He can convert them to WAV files or play directly from PC to MSX cassette port: {NO WAREZ!}
There are some titles for MSX-2 (try Red lligths of Amsterdam or the Chess game 2)

Have a nice new year 2007 !!!

BHR: I was aiming at his 128M/128M specification Wink Anyway, maybe he should try to find some external diskdrive on eBay. Otherwise it's finding some suitable piece of software and converting it to WAV, I think.

D-Tail:

maybe he can acquire some diskdrive or flashdrive, but imagine the amount of such Yamaha MSX2 machines in USSR - many thousands of them are spread across this territory. Not everybody will get himself a diskdrive, while cas: and net module solutions are very easy to apply.

"Lyra 2 demo" is 200K+ and requires DOS, so it's impossible to load it even with MicroWAVer's MSX-DOS1+Ram Disk mode.

Also, Lyra 2 is MSX1...

MSX1 is not a problem as long it can be loaded...

@manuel: AFAIK LYRA 2 is very much for MSX2, it does not run on any MSX1 I own.

On MSX1 after you press the spacebar on the screen 0 intro text the screen goes black and nothing else happens.

Well, it uses only MSX1 screenmodes, IIRC AFAIK. Maybe you need to have some memory mapper installed?

manuel,
the question was "what can we use on this specific configuration".

Of course, it's possible to buy a bigger mapper, a diskdrive, or a flashdrive, or another MSX, or OCM, or to use an emulator. The problem is that neither johnny10, nor thousands of others, will buy extensions.
