MSXdev'18 - Wrapping up, poll open, and jury announcement

February 14th 2019 marked the deadline of this year's MSXdev, the annual MSX game challenge that started on March the 12th 2018. The show has been on since 2003 and never fails to make the MSX fan's hearts beating faster. No wonder, as the amount of entries as well as their quality is always A+. The categories to compete in are MSX Classic and MSX Freestyle. With this year's deadline just having passed, the MSXdev'18 compo has finally ended with an amazing yield of 15 entries.

Here's a summary of the goods:
#1 - Burn Us, a puzzle platformer game by CARAMBALAN Studios
#2 - Buddhagillie, a spiritual shoot’em up by Nobuaki Washio, GW’s-Workshop
#3 - Virus LQP-79, a horror-themed arcade game by Pentacour
#4 - C.C.R. Anexo 1 El Algoritmo, a visual novel by José Soto Gándara
#5 - Dreams Puzzle, a slide puzzle by Mapax
#6 - Linez, a matching puzzle by Wim Dewijngaert
#7 - Bumper Ship Racing, a multiplayer racing game by Uninteresting
#8 - Any Treasure Day, a classical text adventure by Timmy
#9 - Shoulder Blade OVERDRIVE, a 3D shoot'em up by Nobuaki Washio, GW’s-Workshop
#10 - GRAVITICA, an original (STG-like) by Yusuke Miyauchi
#11 - Barbarian The Duel, a fighting game by Bitvision Software
#12 - XRacing, a racing game by Brain Games
#13 - PWND3, a classic Snake with added puzzle game elements by Metal Soft
#14 - Quartet, an action puzzle by Ilkke & bitsofbas
#15 - Goal, a soccer management simulation by G.G.G. Soft

All submitted work is downloadable for free at the MSXdev site and to play at your heart's content. Be sure to play 'em all and cast your vote on the public poll that is now open.

A dedicated jury will asses all entries. And this year's jury is comprised of:

Gameplay category - Miikka Poikela aka mp83
Graphics category - Toni Gálvez
Sound category - Maarten van Strien aka Wolf
Polish/Overall category - David Fernández aka Imanok
Compatibility category - Manual Bilderbeek
Originality category and additional remarks - all of the jury

If all goes well, we'll have the final results in on April the 11th.

In the first place I would put them almost all but if I really have to choose I'm on Shoulder Blade OVERDRIVE.

Thank you, KdL. But unfortunately a public poll that somebody foolish can cast 14 votes at a time is nonsense. I never want people to think me such a fool, so I refuse the community prize at least.

As a child I would have played for hours, I remember the weeks of efforts to finish Eindeloos who used giant sprites, unforgettable moments!!

As I'm a participant in the contest, I won't leave a vote either. My vote would likely go to Shoulder Blade OVERDRIVE otherwise. The reasoning why the player had to handle the shooting but leave the controls to the AI made me smile. And I'm a fan of chase-view rail shooters, even if this is a bit untraditional one.

Still, thanks for the organizers for organizing this.

The way I understood it, AIs were not given the permit to kill humans, so a human must be the one to pull the trigger. I'm not a huge expert on scifi, but this sounds like Asimov's first law of robotics.

If we consider the construction of a robot made by civilians, all these laws are okay.
But if the robot is built by crazy scientists or terrorists, then I don't think there are limits whatsoever.

@hamlet The information could be found in the manual; it isn't that much of a find.

@Pencioner I may have not let facts stand in the way of the use of an idiom. In the game, the player will both move the aiming reticule and shoot, but the mecha moving sideways is (mostly) handled by the AI. This would still fall afoul of the 2nd law, I suppose. I'm trying to remember what game it was where the two sides of the war were so that one side permitted fully AI-controlled combat vehicles/mechas/something and the other (player's) side didn't give the AI the "right" to shoot... but can't.

So many cool games. I like Burn Us, Bumper Ship Racing, Shoulder Blade OVERDRIVE, Quartet. Hard decision. :-)
BTW, congrats to all the participants and to MSXDev. This edition definitely rocked!

So I have played all the games through tfh's website. The ones I could get into easily are Burn Us, Quartet and X-Racing. The latter being the clear winner for me, by some distance. Solid, smooth and polished gameplay.

MSXdev rules say as follows.
