Indeed, prices in the early nineties were prohibitive in Europe for imported Japanese MSX stuff. In Spain the A1ST was €721 and the A1GT €841 (nearly as much as a PC clone with monitor which were around €900). Metal Gear 2 costed €60, SD Snatcher €72 and the Sony HBI-V1 video digitizer €240. At the same time you could still find a brand new Sony HB-20P (MSX1) for just €120 and Konami MegaROMs with SCC for €35.

Would be about the same here. I just did not convert to today's euro but the value of back then. An MSX computer cost more than an average monthly paycheck.

In 1991 an FS-A1ST would cost fl. 1.795,-. That's € 1.487,81 in today's money.
Solid Snake was fl. 155,- in that same price list. That would be € 128,47 now.

Funny to see that in a few year’s time we can just take prices in ƒ and use them as € directly since after inflation correction the amounts will match.

Inflation is going fast. Within a decade all the value of money got nearly in half.

Unlike a lot of other items (especially in the software corner) a turbo R is still very much cheaper than when it got released (if you take money devaluation into consideration). In 1991 an FS-A1ST would cost fl. 1.795,-. That's € 1.487,81 in today's money.

It's a lot of money to spend, but it's quite a lot cheaper than it used to be Wink

Have to disagree. Unused old new stock tR will easily sell for $1500 or even more. We speak about used items are cheaper (considering inflation) than new items at the time, it is not right comparison Wink I don't know how much used tR was...

I don't know which part of the world you're from, but in western Europe, inflation has been around 2-3% per year for the last decade. Compounded inflation over that same period is therefore around 30%.

This is yet another post of people thinking that any project based on a Raspberry Pi should cost mostly the same or a bit more than a Raspberry Pi.

Please, think twice about the raw bare costs of everything included in the MSXVR apart from the Pi and then add the time and development of the software part... It's quite easy reach the conclusion that the MSXVR is actually cheap for an amateur project. Sure, mass-produced by a company could be half the price, but the MSX community is not there.

If anyone thinks the MSXVR is not much more than a Pi+emulator, then I suggest to buy the cool Raspberry Pi 400. For much less money you get that emulator with keyboard, and... for my point of view it is a totally legitimate choice, I love emulators. MSXVR is way more than tat.

Do the math:

If you would buy it seperately/do it yourself, the bare minimum you need is:
RPI 30 euro
RPI cartridge port expansion 50 euro
Mechanical keyboard cherry mx clone maybe 50~100
and then you need to get a case which can run up to a few hundred euros if you want decent quality industrial 3d printed (not those home printer things)

realistically speaking with a MSXVR you get
custom pcb based on rpi
custom injector mold plastic case
custom firmware/software
custom mechanical keyboard
many hours of work

imho the price is more than fair.

Even my LEGO cases are about 100 to 180 Euros cost for used tiles.
