Now that I've got the current 16.0 version perfectly working, I have a question: Which MSX1, MSX2, and MSX2+ machines are the best ones to use for this emulator?

It depends on what you want to emulate/use them for... They are just like the real machines, at least that is the intention.

I use the boosted MSX2 as default myself. It's a super expanded Philips NMS 8250. It should run most MSX software. But I also use the turbo R machines of course. And e.g. the Toshiba HX-10 for tape games.

MSX1 (EU): Philips_VG_8020
MSX1 (JP): National FS-1300
MSX1 (JP) with disk drive: National_CF-3300
MSX2 (EU): Philips_NMS_8245
MSX2 (JP): Sony HB-F1XD
MSX2+: Panasonic FS-A1WSX
turboR: Panasonic FS-A1GT

These are machines without firmware boot menu and a common compatible configuration.

The best machine depends on what you want to do.

Note that every now & then I run into issues using the boosted MSX2.

I believe some game you don't name on forum doesn't run properly in it either.

Related/similar topic: Which machine do you use and what for? (@Grauw: hmm.. your lists/picks kinda differ :)) (but then, not the exact same subject :))

@Manuel @gdx: I think for a person who’s new to MSX, the enormous list of machines is quite overwhelming. So some recommendations are good to have. Even I myself had to delve through the wiki to find machines which fit the bill for the list I made above.

I think it would actually be a good idea if openMSX’s “Change Machine” menu would show the MSX machines categorised by generation with a set of recommended typical machines on top. Maybe a second menu, keeping the alphabetical list around as well for the power users.

Yes like BlueMSX.
Or better put some filters (eg. MSX Generation, RAM, Memory Mapper, language, etc.).

Sounds reasonable. An entry in the FAQ would make sense as well I suppose?

(On a side note: I had this idea of putting together an openMSX 101 / getting started guide, haven't gotten around to that (yet)..)

That definitely makes everything easier, thank you.

Note that I've experienced a couple of issues w/ the boosted MSX2 config: Space Manbow + FRS corrupted gfx & World map issues @ the Noramos production. The boosted MSX2+ JP is fine in these cases.

Do you get the same on a plain NMS 8250 then?
