Hi,

Sorry if this is a super double noob question , but I am quite new to MSX (was a commodore person for most of my life, lol)

I am trying to convert some of images I have to floppies to run on a real msx2
Iam using an old pc now with RuMSX

however, I dont get it.. when I write _format, there are 2 options , 1 is single sided, the other is double sided
but why cant I get double sided work? I have always to mask the hold of the tape to make single density not double, format it only 1 sided 360 kb ... however some .dsk wont fit in there .. any solutions? doesnt my A370 Sakhr support double sided? am I missing something here

secondly, can I burn .rom to floppy? can I convert it or something like that?
thnx

I think you are mistaken high density and double density and double sided and single sided. High density disks have two square holes. One on the left for write protection or not and on the right if there is a square hole it is high density. On a pc drive you need to tape off the right hole if there is one to be able to format it double sided or single sided. MSX can only handle non high density formated disks. A HD disk formated as double density (720k) will work on msx. On an msx you can format your disk single sided (360k) or double sided (720k).

I don't know if that model has single sided drives or double sided.

You can copy a .rom file to floppy. You need a rom loader to load the rom though, like loadrom odo or other tools. Your msx needs to have enough memory though so if the rom is 64kb you probably need to have 128kb memory because the romloader also takes some memory.

hi , thnx for the explanation,
my msx2 has 128 kb memory , its based on a sanyo I think

ok , now for the floppy inserted in a real pc , it is only being formatted as single side 9 sectors 360 kb, when I select 2 sides 9 sector I get error , both square notches covered ... is it the pc drive can't format that ?

if it has 128kb memory you can probably only load up to 64kb roms with rom loader. If you want bigger roms to load you probably need to buy a megaflashrom that can flash a rom file to it. Then the memory doesn't matter anymore...

After reading the MSX.org Wiki your computer does support Double Sided (720kb) Disks.

sorry I was editing my reply while you was typing too

so any recommended flash cart to run everything from it without the need of any other add ons ? just 1 for all solution ? such that I can run all msx library from? or are there some .dsk exclusives which can't be run that way?

If you give me the constraint of everything without other addons, probably get the gr8net. It has scc, msc-music, msx audio, mp3, it has a slot for sd cards, 1024kb ram and some more extras. See here: https://www.msx.org/wiki/GR8NET#Specifications
Otherwise would have also suggested a megaflashrom.

A mega flash rom has SCC, 512kb extra memory if you choose the option, 2 sd card slots if you choose to have 2 or 1. Gr8net has more options, but have more experience with the megaflashrom although I have both. WIth the Gr8net you will have most of your bases covered but there is always more expansions for msx. Like in another thread: msx is like a lego box, you can always expand it more Smile
