I think Br-MSX just doesn't scale down the image to fit the GBA screen.

Like I said before that's pretty much impossible on GBA without using splits (read: smart programming). Or some framebuffer VDP emulator (those could be software blitted to the VRAM framebuffer, but that costs CPU%).

I bet they use one of the tile modes, 16c tiles. That's something the GBA can handler very easily (making any screen 1 or screen 4 emulator would be really easy as a matter of fact).

Arjan said Br-MSX is NOT scaling the image, which is why it looks cropped on the screenshots.

Ofcourse you don't need to really scale anything. You can just skip every 5th line and every 16th pixel during rendering.

I know he said that. And I thought he was wondering why when posting that.

Yes you could do that in a scanline alike renderer, but wouldn't it be easiest and fastest to convert screen 1 & 4 tiles to GBA 16c tiles? Converting 8x8 to 7.5x6.037 tiles is a lot harder.

Heh, I wasn't really wondering, but since BrMSX for GBA has never been released one can never be sure Wink

Well, there are several emulators which scale down the screen (FooN, PocketNES) and the ColecoVision emulator for GBA also seems to be scaling the images, so it _is_ possible (as noted before).

And you could also centre the image horizontally and change the vertical offset every scanline.

Is there any development as of yet?

AFAIK there's no progress. Status of BrMSX for GBA is still unclear to me. The GBA would be able to emulate MSX1, but MSX2 is just impossible (at least, if you want decent speed).

It would be great an MSX emulator for the GBA, although we are aware of the lack of power of the GBA processor and the shortage of RAM...

I am really amazed by the efforts of Jr with fMSX for Symbian OS, however although these phones have a powerful processor (ARM 104Mhz), a mobile phone is not as suitable for playing as a GBA (well.. maybe that the N-Gage one... although the N-Gage screen sucks...)...

Any ideas?

One thing a GBA has not lack of is ROM, so the best option for good emulation would be static recompilation.
