A PC AT ranging from 1997 to 2004 (Pentium to Pentium III range) is between 100watt and 230Watt for the CPU tower alone. I suppose that's why the warning is there. So, I don't think that was written with 1980-ish technology in mind.

Well, this converter is not the VOLTAGE converter. It is the PFC (Power Factor Corrector) converter. And because of that it can be used with the heating devices, were there power, not the voltage is the most important characteristic.
But when used with radio equipment, the overvoltage spikes will occur in the AC mains transformer (if there is one).

wow thank you for all explanations!
can I have a recommendation on a transformer which is safe to use?

Is this one okay or is it also no-go? http://www.ebay.com/itm/50-Watt-AC-AC-Power-Converter-50W-fo...

The one I mentioned on the previous page... I've blown two of the ones you link to in quite a short period...
Here's the pic again:

I got very anti certain converters since they've got no way to let go of the warmth (which becomes heath, which becomes bloody hot and you can see where that leads you).

50W is just not enough... It will indeed become a heating device instead of proper transformer. I would look for 100W models.

Well... at least the numbers look better... I don't have any good recommendations... The internal transformer coils of my A1ST & A1WX and the external transformer that I use with A1GT has been made by Trafox... I've been very happy with them and I've had no any warming or other issues with them during last 20 years, but the real reason why I have them is probably because their transformer factory is less than 10km from where I live. I'm sure it has not been the cheapest, smallest or lightest solution, but quality is hi-end professional grade and using them has been just the most simple solution for me personally. :)

I can heartily recommend this one.

Any step-down transformer that says “made in Japan” is probably a good buy.
