Yes the joystick ports are all the same for MSX1, MSX2, 2+ or TurboR machines, and can take Atari-style joysticks like The Arcade (or -Turbo), Competition Pro and compatibles. Also it's possible to connect mouse/trackball or paddles designed for MSX.
Note that MSX supports 2 fire buttons. Sometimes a joystick has multiple fire buttons, that activate the same signal (= software sees it as 1 button). Unless you know the specific joystick, you can't always tell from the outside what type a joystick is, only way is try or check wiring inside. PS: joystick / joypad wiring is usually easy to modify.
Most MSXers will probably recommend a "The Arcade" joystick by Suzo, with 2 (independent) fire buttons, one in front and one on the top. Arcade quality. (I probably have plenty around, let me know if you want one...)
