I'm on the lookout for a Yamaha FM Sound Synthesizer Unit, model SFK-01.
Anyone happen to have one they would like to sell?

I'm located in the UK, but would be happy to meet (reasonable) shipping costs from anywhere.

Thanks!

SFK-01? I guess you mean the SFG-01, right?

No, I definitely mean SFK-01; it is mentioned several times in the instruction manual for the UPA-01 Playcard Reader, and is always quoted as SFK-01. There is no mention of SFG-01 anywhere in the manual, but I guess it could be the same thing?

I'm only aware of two Yamaha sound units: SFG-01 and SFG-05.
Never heard of that UPA-01 thingy, though. What's that?

[EDIT: Ah... the Ultimate MSX FAQ mentions that SFK-01 as "same as SFG-01, but without MIDI"]

Ah, that is useful information - thanks!
In which case, I'm sure an SFG-01, or even an SFG-05, will work for me.

The UPA-01 is a system for reading and playing "Yamaha Playcards" - magnetic cards containing music data, normally for use with Yamaha keyboards. It consists of the Program cartridge, and a separate card reader which plugs into the cartridge to scan the Playcards.

With a standard MSX, you just get 3-channel sound via the built-in sound chip, but with the FM Synth module you get 8-channel, fully-orchestrated arrangements. Also, when used in conjunctionm with the YK-01 keyboard, it has "training" modes to teach you to play the Playcard music on a keyboard.

I believe the Yamaha MSX machines have the FM Synth module built-in, but not 100% sure.

Not al the Yamaha MSX machines have the FM synth module. The CX5M is the one that was (is) most frequently seen. They have produced MSX computers without the Synth modules as well.

If you want to use the synth-modules on a Non-Yamaha MSX you also need a special connection cable. Yamaha had a special connector on their MSX models for the Synthmodules.

There is a SFG-05 on Ebay Germany right now. Complete with Box and manuals. But....it doesn't come with the connector to connect it to a Non Yamaha MSX

Thanks! Item watched.

Pity the seller requires payment by bank transfer - that costs an arm and a leg from the UK :-(

Remember that you still need the Yamaha Unit Connector (UCN-01) to connect it to an ordinary MSX computer.

BTW: Isn't banktransfer within the EU free of cost ?

Yes, Understood - thank you.

What exactly is the UCN-01? Is it just a passive cable? Wondering if it would be possible to make something to allow the Synth to be connected.
