Indeed this is very well known and annoying problem...

Now after 30 years, they finally bothered to fix this problem in Notepad, but I guess it still takes some time before we can expect it to be delivered in to our Windows machines. More info here:

And actually the Windows/MS/MSX-DOS world was right in this one. If you look where these characters come from, you actually needed both a linefeed (LF, 0x0A) and carriage return (CR, 0x0D) in order to start at the beginning of the next line.

Apart from that, it is indeed an annoying problem.
