If you are hardcore MSX developer, you can go and develop on an MSX for MSX, using WBASS assembler for instance, or Compass.

I'm using M80 assembler and KID editor on the MSX2. It's feels great and down to the metal, but IMO you can only go so far with it. First, any error in the program could mean a crash, then you need to wait for the full reset cycle (around 20 secs with Carnivore 2). Second, I'm not aware of a real-time debugger that you can run your program under and watch those register values live. Third, you could potentially damage your MSX if you do something terribly wrong in code by mistake? Not sure about this last one, but I'm always nervous about the possibility.

Other than that, it's quite an experience Big smile
