Yzi proposed that we should also release the sources for our oldest demos in order to preserve them at least somewhere. Well, why not Smile Let's start with Aekrus, the first ever L!T release. More to come soon, if I can still decipher the contents of my old messy directories.

Unfortunately the source code to Aekrus's music seems to be missing, because the archive only contains a binary blob converted to a .db array. I don't remember why it was done that way, because IIRC we used the same version of TASM. Luckily the music from Aatnos is there with player source and everything.

All is well, Marq still had the original sound player source (with Finnish comments and names)

To celebrate this "release" I made an XM version of the music, with MoonSound / YRW-801 samples
http://www.kameli.net/~yzi/aekrus_moonsound.xm

I didn't try yet, but that XM song should be directly convertable to the SootSound LTM format for playback on an MSX and MoonSound, DalSoRi, OPL4 Shockwave or Wozblaster.

Uh... what?? Really??? ...and you actually teach programming, right? From first file I looked I found 5 different ways of writing "horse" in Finnish... Main program had two comments...(like "Don't put it there, stupid!" (free translation)) I mean... gosh... binary trough HEX-editor now looks suddenly pretty readable. Smile

It's great that you preserve this for future generations, but now I can't sleep anymore! I love your demos and beautiful design in them, but then this...

Nyyrikki: obviously the sources weren't meant for publishing or maintenance decades later, let alone teaching. Smile But even despite the funny labels and comments, I find the structure quite clear. It's not a very complicated program really.

At least my first Z80 program looks pretty clear to me even today

I had read somewhere that Rob Hubbard composed his tunes in asm source code, so I had to try it. I don't know if it was even true, because later on I've read in another Hubbard interview that he did have some sort of a hex editor at least for the instrument sounds, so he could immediately hear the changes.

NYYRIKKI: Don’t be mean! I hate it when people say “I won’t publish my code because I need to clean it up first”, because that always means it will never get done and never get published. I much prefer ugly dirty uncommented rushed big ball of mud code to no code at all! So bring it on, people! Smile

I have to say my personal favorite, looking at the code now with fresh eyes, was the VBL counter called "vituttaa" (I'm pissed off). Dunno if it was Yzi's or mine.
