Hi, recently I ve seen some cpc games where scrolling is handled partially. When the main character reach one screen edge the screen scroll by a certain amount.
Gng is an example
While not applicable to all situations it does not look to bad.

Wondering why it was not used extensively on msx. I m not aware of this approach on msx
Anyone could give examples.?

On MSX the VRAM is accessible only through I/O ports or VDP commands VRAM to VRAM, VRAM can not be shared with the CPU, and scrolling functions in hardware are very limited. MSX2 has only vertical scrolling on full screen. MSX2+ adds horizontal scrolling on full screen only.

So? What is the point of this ethernal Nursery rhyme?
This make the proposed approach more suitable via name table scrolling than other system with fast vram access or hw support

You mean like Borfes and the Five Evil Spirits ?

I think I’ve also seen it elsewhere.

The benefit of this approach is that the a 8x8 scroll looks better if it’s quick bursts than if you scrolled normally. Though I have to say personally I think it’s okay, not bad but also not great.

Yeah.
In think a Gng version on msx 1 could have been done in this way.

I think you mean a scroll like in Gauntlet
You can walk anywhere but, scroll moves when you reach a concrete point in the screen but, if you reach the edge of the map, then the scroll stops and you can move till the edge of the screen/map.
