I guess you're using OpenMSX if you use toggle_freq.
Just select a machine which runs at 60Hz as standard like most Japanese models.

Select a Panasonic FS-A1GT as the default. This was the last Japanese MSX machine. It will not only fix your frequency problem, but also has more RAM, built-in DOS2 and the turbo, allowing you to run more software without a hassle.

This case confirms a problem I've been telling to the openMSX team for quite some time: the default C-BIOS machine at 50Hz doesn't make sense:

- It confuses new users, who don't know how to reconfigure it to run at 60Hz
- Causes a lot YouTube reviews for users that are not experienced with the platform to judge the MSX as slow, when the only problem is that they're running Japanese games at 50Hz. BlueMSX is also "guilty" in this aspect.

Since the MSX was born as a Japanese standard, I think that it makes sense that the default machines should be NTSC too.

Fwiw, I also think a 60 Hz C-BIOS machine would be a better default.

Me too, but what kind of machine? 60Hz European? That's not realistic. 60Hz Japanese? That will give Japanese texts on most games, not very nice for a default. 60Hz US? That hardly exists. 60Hz Brazilian? Problems with weird keyboard layout and is of course kind of non-official.

So, be a bit more specific than just saying 60Hz...

C-BIOS is not a real machine anyway… Wink Something’s gotta give.

If not 60 Hz European then 60 Hz US I would say, that it hardly exists (CX5M comes to mind) doesn’t mean it isn’t useful for this purpose Smile. If I were to build a new MSX, I would make it 60 Hz European as well, since 50 Hz isn’t very useful anymore nowadays… The standard and BIOS fields don’t disallow it, just there does not exist a machine with that specific configuration, but a machine with that BIOS doesn’t exist either so there’s that. The tiny possibility that it might introduce compatibility issues does not outweigh the benefit I think, and probably it’s also the least of C-BIOS’s compatibility concerns.

As the goal of C-BIOS is to be compatible, such issues would be important. What kind of such issues are you thinking of?

The only thing I can come up with is a game executing some code for 50 Hz by looking at the country code rather than the display refresh frequency. But it does not seem likely.
