It's a different time unfortunately. It was so much better in the 80s. Like these models (the one from Mr. Nishi which is supposed to be more official) or the MSXVR are not really commercial (few sales, not in stores, not made by a known brand. ...) they absolutely must remain 100% compatible with the old MSXs. I rather see a way to buy a recent machine because the old MSX will always be rarer, expensive and broken. But you really need a software download system at the same time. Mr. Nishi thought about it.

In one of his tweets Nishi said that it won’t be emulated

In the end, Raspberry Pi 400 seems an even better option: an affordable and small computer to do some new stuff and you can install OpenMSX, so you have a "modern MSX".

An msx is an msx if it has msx hw inside so:
no: sw emulation
yes: FPGA as a way to achieve enhanced hw (based on original msx, but enhanced) without create ad-hoc chips.

otherwise is is only another piece of hw emulating an msx or c64, or zx , amiga etc. not a *real* machine

I scanned trough his tweeds last week and it’s hard to understand what he really wants and what the actual status is because there is no clear up to date requirements or spec doc. Sometimes hè mumbles somethings as response to a question but also this is sometimes hard to interpret because the Japanese to English translation.

He wants to position MSX3 beside Raspberry Pi. He want MSX3 to be a IOT platform with an AppStore like software distribution system and be able to program( in multiple program languages like MSX basic, Python, etc) a wide range of available sensors (like Groove).
MSX compatibility would be ensured via hardware (fpga) not via emulation.

He stated a few times that he’s working on a serious new computer and no toy computer so let’s see what he develops.
It will be sold initially in only a couple of countries like Japan, Netherlands, Brasil, Italy and a few others.

But it would be nice if he would communicate a little better about the new MSX3. Or hire someone who could help him with communication as he is a very busy man.

His vision on what he want to achieve seems legitimate and also possible IF he manages to keep the costs down.

I’m afraid that 600 euro’s as mentioned earlier in this thread would be to much as a Raspberry Pi 400 is much cheaper.
Btw he also stated that it will look similar as a Pi 400.

Wink
In any case, the MSX Turbo-R was only sold in Japan and we were able to import it into our respective countries. This project seems to be progressing well on Mr. Nishi's part and it must be the case if he hopes to sell it in the first half of 2022 as planned. I look forward to seeing the finished model. Also to know who will manufacture it. And finally to know the online download system that it has planned to make available (subscription or payment by program) I must admit that I am excited as I have been for a long time in the MSX world.

When the model will be finished with the body and the keyboard, it will be good. Mr. Nishi, we can't wait for next year. It seems there will be a download site for games and software. Exciting and amazing.
