In a recent post on my blog I stated that Kai had stolen the ship models used in the cover and intro of his game Life on Mars.

I was wrong. He has showed proof that he legally purchased those two assets back in November.

I APOLOGIZE TO KAI for assuming and incorrectly accusing him of using that content without permission.

The blog post has been corrected.

(This message doesn’t mean I’m back to msx.org. I’m posting because I said I would apologize to him.)

I do think it shows character that you're willing to publicly admit a mistake.

HAHAHAHAH, I'm gone but now I'm back. I might again be gone, but soon I might also be back. But if I could be gone would I then even be back? You never know when the need arises! Just too confusing. oO

That sure isn't something everybody does, especially on forums... Javi, I'd be glad to see you back on MRC, my little PiLD project wouldn't exist without your help Smile !

Nice words/move, and thanks for pointing out that ship. I thought it looked very professional when I saw it in Life on Mars.

And imho using assets is not wrong (not saying Javi is implying that). Many people use them in indie games (i think mostly in mobile games). It is like using sample packs when making music, or existing sourcecode/engines when coding etc.

It’s quite common for Unity developers, there’s even an “asset store” built into the product.

I hadn’t even thought about it before because I associated it with those platforms, not realising that also for MSX productions it’s a great solution to dealing with lowering the amount of effort to have professional-looking MSX2/2+ graphics. There’s a lot of pixel art out there for sale.

Yes one of the things I said in #msxdev when discussing Kai's game was indeed "why rip gfx, can just get some from asset stores, sometimes they give away free." (on facebook for example I see it sometimes)

Although in this case I think 60 dollar for a ship in an opening screen is a bit much, I mean all the respect for kai that he paid that amount but I personally wouldn't. But maybe he uses it for other projects too.

All depends on if you sell your game (so you can cover your costs) or not.
I wouldn't buy graphics for a free game, I would invest 60€ or even more if I have a reasonable hope to restore the costs.

IIRC we paid a graphic artist for the pictures of the dragon on the box and manual in ADD
