Zanac does that. Wink

This was the listing in BASIC I was referring to (it is not related to Game Master 2):

10 CLEAR 200,&HC000
20 FOR I=&HC000 TO &HC018
30 READ A$: POKE I,VAL("&H"+A$): N=N+PEEK(I)
40 NEXT
50 IF N=1787 THEN 60 ELSE PRINT "ERROR IN THE DATA": STOP
60 CLS: PRINT "ENTER THE LAST 2 DIGITS OF THE KONAMI CARTRIDGE REFERENCE"
70 INPUT A$: IF VAL(A$)>100 OR VAL(A$)<0 THEN 60
80 POKE &HC00E, VAL("&H"+A$): POKE-1,INT((PEEK(-1)XOR255)/64)*84: POKE &HC002,INT(INP(&HA8)/64)*84: POKE &HC013,INP(&HA8)
90 DEFUSR=&HC000: A=USR(0)
100 PRINT "SIMULATION ENABLED": PRINT "INSERT THE CARTRIDGE AND RESET"
110 DATA F3,3E,00,CD,3B,01,21,43,44,22,10,40,21,07,00,22,12,40,3E,00,CD,3B,01,FB,C9

If your MSX does not have a reset button you have to type: DEFUSR=0:A=USR(0)

It simulates that you have inserted another Konami cartridge in slot #2. And these are the cheats that you can enable:

http://bifi.msxnet.org/msxnet/konami/combinations

And I did enter 46 for Q-Bert and then used METALION. Both the BASIC program and the trick were published in MSX-Club: 1, 2

Nice memories! :)

Yesterday I beat Salamander. The original version that is.. I tried hard with the enhanced version with the voice set, which makes the graphics and sound fantastic and very engaging. However, there are two gameplay breakers for me: even though graphically the tiles are smooth scrolling, their collision is not smooth scrolling. I thus often get fooled into moving to seemingly void spaces yet I crash the ship. The most troublesome region is during the blackout in planet Lavinia because it's so tight already, but also level 2 is entirely side-scrolled so you'd better not get too close to the left edge of the screen or you may explode mysteriously.

The second issue is the behavioral change with enemies. Some can now cheat and cross impassable regions, making it sometimes even more unfair.

Thus, with the original Salamander cartridge in slot 1 and Nemesis 2 in slot 2, I managed to win it with only one death in the middle of level 2, which you can recover from with a little effort.. but further levels there's a tiny chance you can recover mid-level and win. So Salamander is pretty much a perma-death game Big smile More than Nemesis 2 even.

Still, Salamander remains my favorite so far. It's awesome and the predictions keep the game interesting even when repeating it. But now it's time for the next challenger in line: Nemesis 3. I never played it before, so I'm quite excited. Big smile

You're right... I have to fix the collisions in this version...

You can test with Nemesis 3 Enhanced... The collisions are fixed with the Smooth Scroll.

Hey Victor. I just wanted to say thank you for the awesome improvements on Nemesis 3. I ended up beating it twice, first on the enhanced version then again on the original on MSX1 to compare and appreciate the enhancements. The nice graphics and voice set is just amazing and led to epic moments in the game (that big spider robot showdown, wow!). As you said, it's a straight improved enhancement and I had no issues in gameplay at all. Awesome stuff!

Of the entire series (and even other Konami game series), to me Nemesis 3 plays the most fair. You can recover from your deaths and build up again with just a little bit of additional effort. That doesn't mean the game is clear of unfairness, there are times where you're led to a tunnel network with a dead end, and enemy patterns only escapable by pure luck, and probably the most surprising to me (and one of my favorite moments too) was the huge metal wall across the entire screen with just one perfectly timed shot to punch through.

So here goes my personal rating of the series:

  • Difficulty (easy to most challenging): 1, 3, X, 2 (X is Salamander).
  • Graphics (good to best): 1, 2, X, 3
  • Music (good to best): 1, 3, 2, X
  • Storyline/plot-twists (good to best): 1, 2, X, 3

All in all, a wonderful series. Had a blast beating it (both literally and metaphorically) Big smile Can't recommend it enough.

@wbahnassi Yeah! Activation of "Galaxy laser" and Crab Warlock's "you shall be crushed" are really epic moments.
