On that subject, I have the feeling that the Kyokugen shmup is using the key click for the hits sounds... And it renders quite well, as the hits pace can be very intense!

Although from a technical point pf view it is nice/interesting, i generally dont like the sound of beeper music

It sounds all right but too distorted and lofi for my taste.

Msx is able to play back better quality samples/pcm/etc through the AY itself, scc, music module, opl4 even opll, so that is why it is hardly used, if ever.

I thought about this a while back, using keyclick as a sampled drum channel, but besides being very hard to code, let alone being useful in a game environment, i feel we dont really need it. Psg noise register is basicallly a 4th channel, which is excellent to make snares and hihats with! I think some zx demoscene tunes use noise for kick/bassdrum as well, but i have not been able to make one yet (though i havent tried hard enough yet).

This is a Spectrum 128k demo, in which MSX and Elvis are mentioned.
It is marvelous what they have done with the AY3. I´m not sure they using the click trick, but I thought I heard that typical Specci sound in there.

In my test file I make the key click produce a square wave, and it sounds exactly like a PSG tone. Of course, absent volume controls and with the CPU requirement, it’s more limited than the PSG, but on the other hand, it’s a fairly easy to make it produce a pulse waveform. Easier than making the PSG do it. That seems interesting.

Im listening to the song at the moment. Those "specci sounds" that you talk of are most likely just the regular psg channels but using hardware volume envelopes. You can get very freakish sounds by using that. The composer also made the music for IO, an msx demo by Logon System https://youtu.be/jSS08co8zvA

Anyway, very nice music in that We Are Alive demo, thanks for sharing ;)

interesting indeed, maybe nice for a "musicians" tracker /music editor (aka making songs that squeeze every bit of power out of the msx but impractical for use in games). Perhaps even find a way to play 2~3 channels through that Wink
