That´s a reason to buy an MSX with a Speed-Controller.

Louthrax I played Laydock 2 usually in 2 player mode, I think that makes the game a bit easier Big smile

But I don't remember how I or we beat that boss, it was really 25 years ago or so since I last played that game seriously. Perhaps I will give it a go later today.

Curious to see your reaction today Wink The bad thing is that you go back to level 1 when you die in front of this boss (IIRC, in the Laydocks, you continue 1 stage before the one where you died).

As Undeadline has been mentionned several times, here's a tip I've found recently, and that I've not seen mentionned yet on the Internet: the result of the question marks that give you random bonuses is controlled by the number of shoots you performed just after it has appeared. It took notes of the order of the items depending on the shoot count on a piece of paper... that I've lost! This really helps a lot when you know it.

Just throwing in my 2c based on memory... but I remember Laydock 2 as by far the easiest Laydock that I've played. I played Laydock and Super Laydock and never finished either, since I found them somewhat monotonous and they got harder in the later levels. However, Laydock 2 was fun and easy, and I loved the animations in the cut scenes and the end demo and the variety of perspective and scrolling. And I am no shoot-em-up hero by any stretch - I never got past stage 4 of Aleste 2, don't remember if I ever finished any Nemesis beyond Nemesis 1 without cheatcodes and never had the patience to try and finish Undeadline, Aleste Gaiden, Zanac-Ex or any of the other classic shooters.

If memory serves, the trick to make Laydock 2 easier is to play through the first level a couple of times so that you receive weapons upgrades which make the later stages easier. And to save your progress. Overall, there are only four areas (each consisting of a birds-eye view stage followed by a horizontal side scrolling stage except for stage 3, which is a giant side-scrolling spaceship. Also keep in mind that you have two weapons and can shoot targets on the ground.

By the way, thanks for the topic... There were still a couple of tunes that needed covering... One tune done today... Smile

Curious to listen to that Smile I had the main theme in my head for a while (same BGM is used for stage 1 & 2 if I'm not mistaking).

i did that on a previous DISK. It's a mix of the intro and stage 1-2.
Be sure to plug msx-audio and msx-music each to one side. It's coded that way. Stuff tends to sound off if you listen to just one chip or mix them both mono.

Super Laydock and Laydock 2 are way more easy if you are lucky enough to have a really skillful 2nd player, which in my case was Sama. I've beaten both those games with him in 2-player mode. I don't think I could have done it by myself.
I always liked Laydock 2, even if I think Louthrax's analysis about the weak points all hit the nail on the head. Can't really argue with that.

I loved Daiva 5, but people tried to explain to me multiple times how to win a planet battle, but somehow my brain is just incapable to understand it. I hear it's a great game when you get further into it (and actually are able to defeat planet's defenses).

About Undeadline, just set the difficulty to 'EASY', set the renshya (autofire) 'ON', know where the fairies are, and stick to the weapon(s) that fit your character/stats that you buffed. It shouldn't be all too big of a problem, then.
I could give more info if desired.

Aleste Gaiden uses multiple songs from Golvellius '2'.

@ fondacio: Considering Aleste 2, are you aware of the following things?
(1) Difficulty setting
(2) Player speed setting
(3) Weapon number 6 making the game very easy

I cheated my way throug Laydock 2 yesterday. Quite crappy to find out that some bosses are invulnerable to some weapons... Ran into some never heard (by me) music which was quite nice for a change Smile
