Hi there, I'm new to the MSX scene. I'm a long time Metal Gear series fan and I love other typed of retro gaming (famicom, pc engine etc.) so I've been looking into getting an MSX to play Metal gear and maybe someday metal gear II: solid snake.

It's my understanding that I need an MSX2 computer from japan to play Metal Gear II on anyways, so if I get that, will it play the Euro version of the first metal gear?

Also, I spend a lot of time on my laptop, so should I get this official USB MSX Reader from ebay:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&item=350150719563

or should I just go with a Sony MSX2 from japan?

I really like the convenience of that USB reader with the MSX PLAYer software, but does it only run on Windows XP?

I have two laptops: Macbook and PC, the PC is Vista Ultimate 64bit, now I understand I can get a program that runs windows on a mac, as well as OSX so would it cost way too much to get that program and a copy of XP for my mac just to run the USB MSX Reader, or will it run on my Vista PC?

Okay so maybe not a quick question, but any and all help is GREATLY appreciated! :)

I'm not sure about this but I believe bluemsx supports the game reader.

For Metal Gear 2 you can use any msx2 (or higher computer)

For Metal Gear 1 you need either a JP or an EU MSX depending on which gameversion you have.

If you dump the Metal Gear 2 rom you can apply an IPS patch too it and play it on any emulator (blueMSX/openMSX prefered Tongue)

Sunrise should make their product easier to buy though, like putting them on ebay or Yahoo Auctions Japan, I would buy many of the products and I think there are others like me out there.

It is easy enough to sent an email and you can pay in various ways including paypal. Though indeed ebay is an extra option.
Our buyers are mainly from europe ,so no need I suppose for Yahoo auctions japan, cause if I hear the word auction it sounds really as if it is second hand

The patch will apply english in the game. And yes, it is unofficial translation. You can also get a PlayStation2 and Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence. One of the discs contains both games in english.

If you want to play it in an emulator, just use a ROM image. If you want to play the real cartridge, play it on a real machine.
That's my advice.

It comes with the same msx-player-which is an emulator- as the japanese, but as said including a cable
It is also supported in blue msx, but the msx-player is better as it concerns megaroms. If you plan to use smaller than megaroms , blue msx is better. And as said it is quite a lot cheaper
