I recently got a cx5m and found out that the north american release only has rf. Is there any easy modification that I could make to get at least composite or better?

You can make a cable with video composite and sound output. Pinout is here:

http://www.faq.msxnet.org/connector.html

Otherwise these RF demodulators may be used:

http://www.amazon.com/Analog-Composite-Output-America-Region...
http://www.ebay.com/itm/RF-Coax-Cable-TV-To-VGA-Video-Audio-...

Can you take a picture inside and of the back side please?

Yamaha used the same TV/Video unit in several models. You could purchase the whole unit from http://www.ebay.com/itm/YAMAHA-YIS503IIR-KYBT-MSX-TV-modul-/...
But there is no info which format the composite is on that, and if it has functional RGB or not. You could ask him.

It is also possible to build the RGB by including the missing components: http://www.cx5m.net/cx5m-ii128-msx2-conversion/
(That page is about MSX2 mod, but info on RGB is also there.)

P.S. Interestingly, in my CX5MII the components seem to be already in place, but the hole in the casing is covered. I'll test if the RGB really works on this one.

CX5MII != CX5M... CX5MII has the V9938 VDP whereas the CX5M has the TMS9918.

Are you sure there is no composite? Well, it should be relatively simple to add. If it has RF output, most of the circuit must be already there.

I think this is the right service manual

If I'm reading it right, the video encoder is a separate module in that model too. Only the French version came with RGB module. There is even the schematics in the manual, but it may not be easy to build one from scratch.

There is no RCA connector on CX5MU but composite is present on 5 pin DIN connector (It is the pin 4, see the above link).

CX5MU use the external modulator below to convert composite video and analog sound signals to RF signal.

This is what I thought might be the case.. so getting composite should be as easy as building the cable? I saw from the pinout one of the pins is 5+ volt what would I use this for? or would i ignore it and just use the sound video and ground?

The 5V is useful if you’ve got an external module that needs to be powered (like the above RF modulator box), and also to send some SCART signals, but for composite you just need the video and GND signals as far as I’m aware.

Yes.

I think +5V is useful only for monitors with similar DIN connector or with scart. For a TV that use RCA connectors: The video (pin 4) go to center of yellow RCA and sound (pin3) go to center of white RCA. Outer rings is GND.
