This is the way C64 use a pixel detail

Msx can use 16 colors in 8x8 pixel, C64 can't.
I's only an example on how different are the VDP's.

In practice though, no-one uses 16 different colours in a block of 8x8 pixels. When looking at these graphics modes, they seem to be plenty: http://www.studiostyle.sk/dmagic/gallery/gfxmodes.htm

Yes, and screen 5 can also show all 512 colours at once…

And screen 2… 201 or something, was it?

and of cource this is one example where the msx version of this game is looking better than c64.
Plus the score bar on msx is in high res & not fat pixels ;-)

Really? hero proves the opposite, and on msx the 16 color per block is wide used.
Obviuously on C64 not. That's because it's not possible out of the box.
You should choose from 2 or 4 color (fat pixels) per 8x8 block

the many C64 modes are for demo only
games use the same one standard mode
1 colorRAM color for a tile, 3 colors the same all over the screen, fatpixels
one can toggle hires tile. then background color is same in all tiles

3 colors same all over the screen, cant port MSX games

the question is not how many colors one uses in 1 tile
the thing is the C64 has 3 colors all the same in all tiles

ok maybe I should say that I am not talking about hero
which is in hires bitmap mode 8k and dont scroll
when I said "games use only the standard mode", I meant speed critical games.
