I am awaiting a Japanese CF2700 (it was DOA from Japan and is now with Omega to be resurrected). If the surgery is successful I will dump it. I also have a Japanese YIS-503 (but suspect it will be the same as the CX5 and CX5F.

Just dumped the BIOS/BASIC of YIS-503 and it is identical to CX-5/CX-5F/CX-11 and many other MSX-1 models, Slot layout is the same as CX-5/CX-5F/CX-11. BIOS and RAM in unexpanded slot 0. Slot 1 normal MSX slot, slot 2 on the back needing CA-01 and slot 3 (unexpanded) for the Yamaha 60-pin modules.

sdsnatcher73: thanks! Perhaps you can make higher resolution photos of this thing, the current photos on the Wiki are so low in resolution, that I can hardly see anything useful on them (e.g. the keyboard layout is hard to see).

Is that just a dummy backplate cover for the module slot?

Yes same one that came with the CX5F. When looking at the CX5/CX5F manual (still downloadable from Yamaha’s CX-5F product page BTW) I have to believe the SFG-01 was not present by default even in those “Music Computers”.

Could you take side / back pics as well?

The CX5M and CX5MII do for sure at least. Guess if the CX5 / CX5F did not, the reason why it’s still in the CX series rather than the YIS series has more to do with the distribution channel and target audience? (Music shops, worldwide, rather than computer stores.)

Yes I’ll take side / back shots tomorrow when at least there is also some natural light...

It may indeed be distribution channel but mostly branding of course, those fit right in with all their other music gear of the era, which would add to their appeal. What came bundled with a machine is of course also marketing related, and surely Europe and US are quite different markets compared to Japan.
