Curious about the modulation capabilities.

Nice!! I'll probably try it out sometimes. Thanks.

There is also a free one here http://keijiro.github.io/vst2413/ but I found it a bit awkward to use.

Gave it a quick try this morning, pretty fun. Loaded it up in an unfinished song. Probably should read the manual. For now I was playing around with the presets but mostly the initial patch which already sounds nice Wink

https://youtu.be/xtFOc8h3zjY starts at 0:08, I solo'd the portaFM channel a few times to let you guys enjoy the FM :)

Thanks Wink

Not sure if I will buy it. I kinda wanna but I dont want to buy more VST's until I've used and mastered the ones I have right now so maybe later Big smile

btw as a comparison https://www.dropbox.com/s/lh2191brv16gd70/fmtrance.mp3?dl=0 same song in trilo FM (slightly different melody). Almost unfair, 3x custom voices in PortaFM/ableton vs 1 hw voice in intro and 1 layered with psg in main.. ;)

Is it just me that I experienced the OPLL being called things like "cheesy" and "plastic" extremely demotivating to continue creating anything with it?
It instantly put me in a deep "what am I doing with my life" mode.
(Just when I was tackling my most complicated arrangement ever to fight the depression. Now I think I got better things to do)

It challenges me to try make it sound less cheesy and plastic. (whether I succeeded is another question).

You did succeed in that. And so did people before us (Microcabin, anyone?).
It may sound naive, but it was just a revelation to me that apparently, people nowadays think that FM synthesis is a big joke. Do they?

Without a doubt FM synthesis is less popular than subtractive synthesis, but I don’t think it’s considered as less. Rather it’s got kind of a mystical appeal to it, with everybody always saying how hard it is to model sounds with it Smile.

If it brightens your mood, I was at a C-Trix performance a year or two ago (@Eindbaas), where he played music on both MegaDrive and Super Nintendo, and at the end of his act he did a "Sega vs Nintendo" poll with the audience for the encore... MegaDrive won Smile.

As for OPLL, clearly it is a budget FM chip so it takes effort to push it to its limits. But the same goes for most chip tunes.
